“I'LL BE seeing you,” is Dick
Burleigh's usual farewell re
mark when he leaves a council
meeting in Clarkstown, Rockland
county, New York. There is noth
ing exceptional about his goodby
except that the tall councilman
with the ready smile is blind. “A
man can’'t give up and forget the
world just because he can’t see
it,” Burleigh says in explaining
that he is trying to live as nor
mally as possible in spite of his
handicap.
Dick Burleigh is a prize-win
ning card player, a good garden
er, a Mr. Fixit at home and an
active politician. A visitor drop
ping in at his house might find
him painting the ceiling, pruning
fruit trees, adjusting a water.
pump or even-cooking a special
dish for his wife Vera.
e
Since his election as council
man, Burleigh has taken his po
litical job very seriously. He has
had several verbal battles with
builders who' put up houses that
failed to meet specifications. He
takes an active hand in all coun
c¢il work and is particularly inter
ested in outlining projects for
what he calls Rockland county's
“great future.” All his life he has
looked to the future and sees no
reason to stop now It stems from
the same quality that gave him
strength to “look™ ahead when
he lost his sight 14 years ago.
In 1939 an explosion in a chem
ical plant where he was employed
put him in the hospital on the
critical list. It took 27 painful
eye and skin-grafting operations
before he was ready to begin
life anew at 45
