Successful 4-H
Forest Program
To Be Continued
A Georgia 4-H Club forestry
program that has seen participa
tion double in the last two years
and has produced a national
champion three years in a row
will continue in 1953.
Dorsey Dyer, forester of the
Unjversity of Georgia Agricul-
Jur& Extension Service, and R.
J. Richardson, assistant state 4-
'H Club leader, announced ‘that
the Southern Bell Telephone and
Telegraph Company is again
sponsoring the demonstration
program for both junior and
senior members, with the a
wards the same as last year.
In Atlanta Southern Bell's
Georgia manager, Lane Hubbard,
said it was a privilege to spon
sor the 4-H forestry program
in 1952, and added that “we are
proud of the accomplishments of
all those who participated in
the activity.” '
~ Hubßbard pointed out that 3.
219 boys and 801 girls last year
worked on forestry project that
included 16,909 ac¢res of wood
land. The year's work was re
| warded with national acclaim
| when Chappell Collins Jr., of
IMitchell County was named na
| tional champion, the third from
|Georgia in as many years. Wil
ilard Colston, Habersham Coun
|ty won the honor in 1951, Lynn
Ogden of Richmond County in
1950. Jean Willis of Tift County.
Iwas the state girl winner last
year, receiving a trip to the Na
tional 4-H Club Congress as her
award.
Announcing the prizes offer
ed for junior members this year,
Dyer and Richardson said every
| county winner who competes at
ia district project achievement
meeting will receive a one-year
| subscription to the National 4-H
:News. First, second and third
|place district champions will re
| ceive cash awards.
| The boy and girl senior win
[ner in each county will get the
National 4-H News and silver
| medals. The 12 district champions
| — six boys and six girls — will
receive trips to the Georgia 4-H
| Club Congress in Atlanta to
| compete for state honors. A trip
ito the National Congress is of
{fered the boy and girl state
| winner by Southern Bell.

six trips to the National Congress
for sectional winners and four

Two 4-H Club forestry camps |
and one naval stores camp an- |
nually give about 300 club mem- |

Bell sponsors a North Georgia‘
forestry camp, while Union Bag
sponsors a similar session for
South Georgia. The naval stores

Also contributing to the suc-|
cess of the state 4-H forestry
program are five pulp and paper
mills which annually distribute;
seedlings through county agents'
to 4-H members. Already this|
year 4-H members have planted
2,500,000 seedlings provided by
Union Bag, International Paper
Company, Brunswick Pulp and
