WINTER JEWELS |
By MAMIE OZBURN ODUM [
The snow falls soft and gently clings; .
Pure and fragile as Fairies wings; ] |
An ermine coat covers the sod, ' “
Like little stars sent down by God. {
Each one a jewel, a polished gem |
To crown the earth a diadem. J
And window panes have pictures etched |
In filigree, the North wind fetched, 1
And on the hearth brown chestnuts toast, v
As sweet potatoes slowly roast, 1
And popping corn is snowy white |
And candy pulls are such delight. i
We laugh in glee at this delight, ‘
White snow sent down for just a night, :
This night we're rich as royalty, |
Snug and happy as can be, 1
But day will come and to our sorrow ;
The sun will melt our gems tomorrow. i

Progress is being made in
providing Walnut Grove Com
munity residents with Southern
Bell Telephone service. Workmen
have now started the secend
phase of the construction pro
gram,
Preliminary planning, engine-|
ering, and the setting of poles'
were completed recently. The
new line, to be built of the latest
type “long span” steel telephone
wire developed by Southern Bell
especially for the most effective
rural telephone service, is expect
ed to have approximately 120
‘subscribers. The subscribers will
be connected with Covington Ex
change, Southern Bell Manager,!
John N, Booth said. 9
. The Southern Bell men who
‘have recently been calling on the
people of Walnut Grove to work
~out details, found them very co
operative and enthusiastic about
'the new line to be furnished as!
'z part of Southern Bell’s activity |
Ite bring the convenience of the!
'telephone to families in rural!
areas. |
The construction now under-|
' way consists of installing steel‘
| strand. As soon as this phase is|
|completed, workmen will begin |
| installing cable.,
| Mr. Booth pointed out that con
|struction of new lines in rural
| communities not only furnishes,
]service to the farm families, but,’
makes everybody’s telephone
‘service more valuable becausel
they can call more people and be
'called by more subscribers.

Farm Loan Measure
(Continued from page 1) i
e
izing a profit from his newi
operation, ;
~ The proposal is closely pat
terned after Mississippi’s Live-‘
stock, Poultry and Egg Act, which |
is already in operation in that
'state. Mr. Callaway went to
Mississippi last Summer and
studied the workings of that law.
He reports general satisfaction
with the way the Mississippi plan |
is working and expects the same |
results in Georgia.
Anticipating no real opposition
to the measure, Senator Callaway |
says this bill has already receiv-i
ed remarkable response not only
from lawmakers but also from
farmers all over the state,
Governor Herman Talmadge
has pledged his support of the bill
if a “practical and feasible man
ner by which its aims can be ac- |
complished is worked out,” and
Leiutenant - Governor fihrvin‘
Griffin has given it “meritorious
comment” Many members of the
Senate have endorsed the pro-i
posal, and several senators who|
are bankers in rural areas have
given it their approval.
Increased fall and winter egg!
production may be obtained by‘
the use of lights either all night
or for a portion of the night.

Engineers for the Agricultural
Extension Service, University of
Georgia say that there are two
basic reasons for cultivating. The
first is to control weeds and the
second to break the surface
crust, If there are no weeds and
no surface crust, you should not
cultivate. i
