Exemption On
Tax For Gl's
Gels Renewal
The Revenue Act of 1951 con
tinues in force with last year’s;
provisions allowing certain
exemptions from federal gross
income tax on the pay of serv
icemen in the Korean combat
sone, William K Barrett Director
of the State Department of Vet
erans Service, said this week.
Excluded from income tax is j
all the active service pay of en
listed personnel, and compensa
tion up to S2OO a month for
commissioned officers. The ex
emption applies to compensation
received for active service in
the armed forces of the United
States for any month during
any part of which a member
thereof served in a combat zone
after June 24, 1950, or was hos
pitalized as a result of wounds,
disease or injury incurred while
so serving in the zone.
The exemption applies only
while there are combat activi
ties in such zone.

. tance. The nearest branch office
’ is located at the Courthouse in

Tax Experts
: Here Four Days
Deputy tax collectors from
the office of the Director of
Internal Revenue in Atlanta will
visit Newton and Rockdale
Counties this month to aid tax
payers with the preparation of
their 1952 income tax returns.
The tax experts will spend
two days in Covington, Feb
ruary 24 and 25. and two days in
Porterdale, February 26 and 27.
They plan a one-day visit to
Conyers on February 18.
They wil make their head
quarters in the post offices of
the towns they visit and their
services will be available free
of charge between the hours of
8:30 A. M. and 5 P. M.

The Covington Junior High
teams will play the Livingston
teams at the Livingston Gym
nasium Friday night at 7:30
o’clock.
Covington girls team defeated
the Porterdale girls team by a
score of 35-20.
The starting lineup for the
Covington girls team was Davi
lynn Bohannon, 16; Josephine
Heard, 11, and Betty Anne Mas
ten, 6; all forwards, and Suzan
ne weigel, Elaine Hornbuckle,
and Mary Lee Costley. Substi
tutes were Peggy Crews, 2; San
dra Bracewell, and Sue Piatt,
and Jeanne Johnson.
Covington boys defeated Port
erade boys by a score of 20-19.
This game was the first game
Porterdale boys had lost and
the first game with Porterdale
that the Covington boys had won.
Porterdale has been the only
team to defeat the Covington
team.
The starting lineup for Cov
ington was Willie Parker, 5; Billy
Daughtrey, 3; Joseph Morris, 1;
Kent Campbell, 5, and Henry
Odum, 1. Substitute was Bobby
Savage, 4.
