Oak Leaf Blister
Causes Newton
Forestry Concern
808 AYCOCK,
COUNTY FORESTER
1 have received many inquir
j ies in the last few weeks from
1 some very worried people here
in the County. They c’- con
, cerned about’ their oak trees
, which they believed had some
terrible disease which would
kil them. The symptoms were
that the leaves turned brown
and fell off starting at the bot
tom of the tree and working
upward. Many people thought
that this was some disease that
would kill off all the oak trees,
such as the chestnut blight.
This is a disease called Oak
Leaf Blister and is caused by
the fungus. Taphrina coerules
cens. This fungus is peculiar in
that it does not produce but
one infection during the year
and this is during the time that
the young leaves are coming out
of the bud. There will be no
secondary infection. The spores
THE COVINGTON NEWS
live over the winter on the
twigs and buds. The control
is relatively simple. If you can
get a spray machine with suf
ficient power to cover an oak
tree. One spray of concentrated
lime sulnhur applied during the
late winter before the buds
open will control the disease
easily. If you can contact a com
mercial peach orchard man, you
might, get him to put on a spray
at the same time he is spray
ing peach trees for the winter
spray.
This disease rarely kills the
tree but does cause some injury
and generally returns each year.
