Covington Garden Club Sees Film
Depicting Local Tour of Homes
The Covington Garden Club :
met Wednesday, May 20. at the
homa of Mrs. T. A. Rape. Mrs. ■
R. P. Campbell opened the meet
ing by reading “The Gardners
Creed".
The usual business session was
held and Mrs. Cohen thanked all
the members for their efforts in
having a very successful flower
show. She also thanked Mrs. E.
E. Callaway, Sr., for the use of
her lovely home for this occasion.
Mrs. S. M. Wax presented the
program. She read a beautiful '
"Musical Discourse” which she
called “A Musical Cocktail" ac
companied at the piano by Mrs.
T. A. Rape playing “Trees", “To
a Wild Rose" and “Easter Flow- j
ers'. She then presented Mrs. \
Adron Harden who made a most
interesting talk on “Native
Shrubs and Wild Flowers'.
As an added feature Mr. Hard
en and Mr. George Hutchinson
showed the moving picture made
of the lovely Cov'ogton homes

The arrangement subject for
the afternoon was any flower in
an old china container or teapot.'
Mrs. Moody Summers, Sr., won
blue ribbon with 95 points. Mrs.
Leon Cohen won blue ribbon,
with 93 points. Mrs. Leo Masten
won blue ribbon with 90 points.
Mrs. Leo Masten also won blue
and red ribbon in horticulture
exhibits. Mrs. Rape won red rib
bon and Mrs. Cohen won white
ribbon.

Church was entertained by Mrs.

I home in Oxford.
Circle Chairman, Mrs. W. H.
. Budd. Jr., presided and opened
' the meeting by reading a prayer
! f- >m the devotional book. “God's
Minute”.
। In the absence of the secretary
and treasurer. Mrs. R. L. Giles
acted in both capacities. The
roll was called, minutes of the
previous meeting was read and
the financial report was given.
As retiring Circle chairman,
Mrs. Rudd expressed gratification
at the growth of the Miss Lynn
Circle since its organization a

The May meeting of the Min
iature Garden Club was held
Wednesday afternoon. May 20.
at the home of Mrs. E. W. Ex
ley, with Mrs. Konrad Purdy
and Mrs. Henry Odum, Jr. as
co-hostesses.
Mrs. Claude Jordan, president,
presided and opened the meet
jug with the reading of the
club collect in unison.
The minutes of the last meet
ing were read and approved,
after which Mrs. Edgar Wood,
treasurer, gave her report.
A business session followed
with final reports being given
by each committee chairman.
Mrs. Rrooks Greer, project chair
man. reported that eighteen
nandina plants had been planted
in Cumberland Park, a project
of the club.
A report was given on the
fashion show that was held re
cently at the Newton County
High School Auditorium, by
Ways and Means chairman, Mrs.
John Fuller.
Miss Margaret Davis, club
photographer, displayed the cam
era has been purchased by the
club, also a number of color
photographs of lovely arrange
ments and horticultural speci
mens that were taken at the re
cent flower show.
Mrs. S. R. Campbell, Jr., flower
show chairman, reported on the
flower show that was held in
April. Mrs. Jordan read to the
club a list of criticisms of a gene
ral nature that were made by
the flower show judges. Since
the judges did not. have sufficient
time to write criticisms on each
arrangement, this was most help
ful to club members.
Awards were presented to Mrs.
Hugh Harris and Miss Sara Call

Mrs. Harris was presented a love

arrangement, and Miss Callaway
was given a beautiful house pl
ant for horticulture.

ing. Mrs. Claude Jordan complet
ed her year by thanking every
one for their cooperation and
hard work during her years as

In turn the members expressed
appreciation to Mrs. Rudd for
her splendid leadership.
The chair announced the gen
eral meeting at the old church.
June 2nd, which will be a Pledge
I Service and annual picnic sup
per.
The program chairman for the
day presented Mrs. Nath Thomp
son, who conducted a beautiful
devotional, Mrs. Hamby Rarton
and Mrs. E. L. Ficquett who gave
a splendid discussion of two mis
sionaries who were Communist
prisoners. The meeting closed
with the Lord's Prayer in unison.
During the social hour, Mrs.
Peek served delicious refresh-
I ments.

afternoon were arrangements
suitable for a breakfast table
featuring spring flowers. Mrs.
E. E. Callaway, Jr. won the blue
ribbon in arrangement with a
• small basket of flowering pome
granate and yellow day lilies.
Mrs. W. S. Cook, Jr. won the
blue ribbon in horticulture with
a red rose,
