Market Pigs At
Early Age For
More Cash
The pig that gets to market at
the youngest age generally makes
the most profit, according to R.
O. Williams livestock special
ists for Agricultural Extension
Service. Williams added that a pig
has to be fed and managed well
from farrowing until he goes to
market if he gets there early.
Pointing out that pigs will be-|
gin eating grain and supplement
when they are two weeks old, the
livestock specialist said creep
feeding should begin then This!
feed, plus a good supply of milk
from the mother should begin
then. This feed, plus a good sup
ply of milk from the mother, is
necessary for maximum growth
during the nursing period, it was
stated.
Williams said a small creep can
be constructed near the farrowing j
house. He recommended covering
the cheep to keep the feed dry,
warning that wet feed sours easi
ly and will cause pigs to scour.
He advised castrating boar pigs
when four weeks old, worming all
pigs with sodum flouride at six
weeks, weaning them at eight
weeks, and vaccinating them for
cholera two weeks later. He said
these four management practices
should be spread out over a
month so the pigs’ rate of growth
will continue high.
Another practice recommended
by Williams is placing spring
pigs on mature oats immediately
after weaning. “Oats is the best
crop for hogging-off until early
maturing hybrid corn is available,
said. “One acre of oats yeilding 25
bushels should be provided for
the average size litter to hog-off.'’
He continued that pigs should
be fed all the balanced protein
and mineral supplement they will
consume while hogging-off oats.
“If corn is available, it would be
advisable to feed it to the pigs
while on oats.”
Williams pointed out that
cribbed corn is usually scarce in
the late spring, and he did not!
advise buying it at a high price
to feed pigs in the oat patch.
He said pigs cared for in this

A Letter From
Our Congressman
A. Sidney Camp
Capitol Hill
Washington, D. C.
March 13, 1954
My dear Constituents:
On Wednesday, the -House
passed H. R. 8224, known as the
Excise Tax Reduction Act of
I 1954. This bill reduces all ex
cise taxes the rate of which ex- ■
ceed 10% to a flat 10% rate. This
includes the present 20-percent
retail excise tax on furs, jewerly,
luggage and toilet preparations;
the 20-percent tax on electric
light bulbs and tubes, safe-de
posit boxes, phtographic equip- i
I inent and film, admissions and
dues and inftiation fees: the pre
isent 15-percent tax on sporting
goods, mechanical pens and pen-
I cils and lighters, local telephone
j and telegraph, radio and cable.
services; the present 25-percent'
! tax on long-distance telephone
service and the present 11-pcr
| cent tax on pistols, revolvers,
fireamrs, shells and cartridges.
The bill also increases excise I
taxes $1,077 billion by removing
the automatic treminatiom date
of April 1, 1954, which the Demo
i crats inserted in the 1980 Act.
The itms involved liquors cigra
ettes, gasoline, automobile, motor- [
cycles, ftucks and buses, parts:
and accessories, and diesel fuel. !
j I thought these increases should .
j terminate as scheduled on April'
1, 1954. These rates of tax are'
even higher than they were dur-1
ing World War 11, and since the;
Korean conflict has ended, I
could not see any justification for,
I ■
manner should weigh from 75 to'
1100 pounds by mid-June when
. turned on early corn. “Pigs will
begin eating corn more rapidly ‘
' if a small area is ehopped down :
! for them. They should be rotated
to a field of medium early corn, ■
which should be ready for hogg
ing about July 1, and then moved I
to a field of late com about mid-1
July. From there, they should go ।
to market by September 1.”
Williams said many good hog;
farmers are now marketing 200-1
pound hogs at from five to six
months of age by following this I
program. He pointed out that |
, "getting a pig to market a few
। days earlier as a result of a well
i planned feed and management
program can easily mean from $3
to $5 more retai n per hog market-,
ed.
continuing these high rates, on a
few selected itmes.
It is a misnomer to call this
bill an excise-tax-reduction bill.
It would be more appropriately
called an excise-tax-increase bill
since net effect will be an in
crease in excise-tax revenues of
$165 million.
The Democratic members of
our Committee attempted to get
other adjustments. These includ
ed a repeal of the tax on ladies
handbags, watches selling for
less than $65, and clocks and
alarm clocks selling for less than
$5.
We also moved-to remove tax
on moving picture show admis
sions where the cost of the ticket
u* fifty cents or less.
Yours sincerely,
A. Sidney Camp, M. C. !
