Jury Selected
From Audience
In Senior Play
Guilty? Did Karen Andre
commit murder? is the question
I that must be answered by the
{jury when the Senior Class of
Newton County High School
presents “Night of January 16th”
|in the auditorium on Thursday
and Friday evenings, April 1 and
2. at 8:30 P. M.
In this Broadway success, the
{audience takes a part in the
l development and conclusion of
the play. With an attractive
young woman on trial for mur
dering her lover, a jury selected
from the audience is given the
problem of deciding her guilt
of innocence. Both men and wo
men are eligible for jury duty.
The play has two exciting end
ings and the one to be used will
be determined by the jury’s
decision.
“Night of January 16th” had
a long and successful run in
New York and has toured the
United States. The great Ameri
can showman, George M. Cohan,
said that it “alternately chilled
and fired his blood more than
any other masterpiece that had
come within his experience.”
Among the well-known people
who served on the jury during
professional performances were
Jack Dempsey, James Roosevelt,
Babe Ruth and Roland Young.
Audiences generally leave the
theatre after performances of
this play debating the correct
ness of the verdict. The play is
system costing SIOO,OOO makes it
equal to any in the state and
. will take care of the city’s needs
for many years to come. All of
this was accomplished' without
any extra cost to the taxpayers,
Eliiott stated. He said the city
adopted the Georgia Power Com
pany rates about a year ago.
Other municipal activities of
interest recited by the mayor
include 420 cases made last year
bv the city police, with fines
collected totalling $13,000, for an
average of $32. The fire depart
ment made 39 calls during 1953;
total fire loss of these occasions
was $3600, or an everage of $92
per fire.
