Winter Grazing
Plans Should
Be Started Now
By W. TAP BENNETT
Director Agricultural Develop
ment Department
Central of Georgia Railway
Early in June I suggested that
beef cattle and dairy herd own
ers should be giving thought to
the use of trench silos for the
laying away of silage as insur
ance against a late summer or
fall drought that might reduce
pastures and feed crops.
The middle of July I called
attention to widespread damage
to com, pastures and other feed
crops caused by the continued
hot, dry weather, suggesting that
damaged corn be cut for silage
and the planting of emergency
feed crops, such as soy beans,
Hagari or other grain sorghums,
sudan grass or millet. I also sug
gested that farmers should care
fully consider their probable
needs before selling their grain.
Drought conditions and high
temperatures continued through
out July and have caused a
very serious loss in the corn crop
and severe damage to pastures.
There are reports from many
sections of farmers having to
feed their livestock due to lack
of pasturage.
Existing conditions make it
imperative that plans for winter
grazing crops be started imme
diately so that they may be
available as early as possible in
the fall, to save feed and reduce
production costs.
The soil should be well pre
pared two to three weeks before
the winter grazing crop is to be
planted, leaving as much of the
top soil on the surface as pos
sible. Just before planting, 400
to 600 pounds per acre of 4-12-12
or other high-analysis fertilizer
should be uniformly distributed
to insure good growth.
Farmers’with well-filled trench
silos, emergency crops of grain
sorghums and ample winter
grazing will have no worries
about sufficient low-cost feed
for their livestock throughout
the fall and winter months.
While-fringed
Beetle Survey
Underway Here
By W. H. McKinney
County Agent
A team of workers of the Unit
ed States Department of Agricul
ture, Agricultural Research Ser
vice, white-fringed bettie project,
are conducting a survey on the
population of the white fringed
beetle in Newton County. This
project is in cooperation with the
Georgia State Department of En
tomology and U. S. D. A. K. R.
Parkinson is area supervisor and
J. H. Milner is district supervisor.
Hhe white-fringed beetle is a
general argicultural pest which
feeds on over 300 species of filant
including flowers, vegetable
crops and field crops. The adult
beetle feeds on foilage of plants
but the majority of damage is
done by the larva feeding on root
systems.
The citizens of Newton County
are urged to cooperate with this
team of workers as they go about
inspecting plants in yards, flower
gardens, vegetable gardens and
field crops.
