OUR FATHER WHICH ART IN
HEAVEN
Matthew 6:9
The Lord’s Prayer h^s been
termed by some as the Disciples
Prayer but I think we can think
of this Prayer as the Lord’s Pray
er that He gave to His Disciples
to pray. This prayer is truly the
Disciples prayer. It should be
come our personal prayer when it
does become personal then you
can pray the Lord’s Prayer with
true meaning and uplift.
Note also that the disciples
asked the Master to teach them
to pray. But that in reality Jesus
couldn’t teach the disciples to
pray without teaching them NOW
TO PRAY. This is so important
for its is in the Lord’s prayer that
men learn how to pray intelli
gently and reverently.
Pray that is meaningful has all
the elements that we find here
in the Lord’s Prayer. It has the
prayer address and attitude. It
has the proper spirit of Prayer.
Then - this prayer goes further
than this. This prayer goes into
petition. Let your requests be
made known unto the Lord. Pray
er always includes petitions.
In Matthew’s version we note
there are 65 words. In Lukes
version there are 58 words. This
then gives and suggests the right
attitude as to the length of our
prayer. It i then the right atti
tude of sincerity. It is the spirit
of the prayer. We are not heard
for our meh speaking but we are
heard and helped by the spirit
of our prayer. The length of the
prayer doesn’t determin the good
of the prayer, but the spirit of
the prayer does determin the ef
fect of the words of Almighty
God.
Again we should approach this
prayer as the disciples approach
ed it. Let us realize that we can
find only in Christ the true se
cret of prayer. And when we

The Lord's Prayer
A Series of Sermons
By REV. R. B. HAWKINS
come in the spirit of Jesus, be
lieving as implicitly as He did
in the things that He speaks of in
this prayer then we shall be able
to pray with real effect.
The Nobles of Florence came to ,
St. Francis’ door and said to him
“You have a secret”. With deeper
constraint we knock at the door
of Jesus and say to Him indeed
you have a secret that we must
know.
As we approach our study then
of Prayer which is truly the heart
of religion we can go forward
with assurance that we shall be
better Christians after we have
made this discovery of the true
meaning and understanding of
prayer.
We note then in the first place
that the Lord’s Prayer begins
with the pronoun “Our”. Jesus
begins this prayer with the all
inclusive term of “Our”. He
prays in His model prayer —
“Our Fatheft-”. This prayer calls
for man’s recognition that all
men are brothers. This prayer
makes it plain that God is the
Father of all mankind. Paul af
firms in the 17th Chapter of Acts
that “God hath made of one blood
all the nations of men for to on
the face of the earth, and hath
determined the times before ap
pointed, and the bounds of their
habitation. Acts: 17:26.
Jesus came to make plain the
answer to the question: Am I my
brother’ j keeper? Yes, we are
our brother’s brother and we have
advanced to that place in our
thinkin^ now that we do realize
a certain positive obligation to
I all mankind because we feel our
spiritual relation to them. We are
one in Christ with all mankind.
The World Council of Churches
has been in session in Evanston,
111. This Council was made up of
600 delegates, representing 161
churches from 48 countries, and
in addition there were 600 ac
credited visitors at the opening
session of the Council. I listened
to the opening session as many
million others did. There was one
thing that was outstanding be
sides the opening sermon and
that was the Lord’s Prayer that
was prayed by all in the various
tongues of the delegates that rep
resented the 48 different nations

of the earth.
Men are growing in their spirit
of unity and they will continue
to grow in this spirit as they de
velop in the true spirit of broth
erhood.
In the second place Jesus teach
es us in His great Prayer that
God is truly a Father. He ad
dressed God as “Our Father.”
God is the Father of all mankind,
but He is truly a Father. It is
interesting that Jesus called God
a Fathertwelve time in the Ser
mon on the Mount and more than
a hundred times in the Gospel of
John. God is spoken of in the i
Old Testament as a Father. Note |
this passage like as a Father |
pitieth his children so the Lord
pitieth them that fear Him.. Ps i
103. Israel is my Son, even my
first born. Ex. 4:22. Also note
another passage. “O Lord Thou
art our Father, we are the clay,
and Thou art the potter, and we
are the work of thy hand.” Ps
64:8.
And finally from the Old Test
ament, “I am a Father to Israel
and Ephraim is my first born.
Jh. 31:9. These passages from the
Old Testament teach us the Fath
erhood of God in relation to the
Israel but our Lord goes much
further in teaching the Father
hood of God in relation to the
individual.
When God become real to you
as he was to Paul who could call
Him “Abba Father” than we
have gone much further than the
Old Testament teaching on the
fatherhood of God.
You remember that Jesus said
to His disciples on one occassion—
“he that hath seen me hath seen
the Father.” Some doubted this
1 but all men who heve believeed in
Christ as the Son of God have
become true sons and daughters
of God the Father.
There is no deeper truth than
we find in John’s Gospel: “As
many as received Him to them
gave he power to become the
Sons of God, even to them that
believe on His name.” Jb 1:12.
God then becomes a Father to
all we believe in the Son of God.
He is more than the creator of the
world although He is the creator.
He is more than the Father of our
spirits, although He is the Father
of our Spirits. God is more than
the giver of moral truth and the
moral law. HE IS OUR HOPE
AND OUR SALVATION. GOD
IS OUR REFUGE AND OUR
STRENGTH AND HE IS BE
COME OUR SALVATION. We
are His children as we believe in
His Son and we seek His fellow-
ship from day to day that we find
in the Fellowship of the Holy
Spirit. God then is our Father.
One who is the giver of every
good and perfect gift; One who
hass hown His great love in gift
of Himself through Jesus Christ
our Lord.
May we too say with the great
