Book Club Speaker
The Covington Book Club met
at the home of Miss Dorothy Lee
Monday afternoon. Eddie Najjar,
who is a teacher at Covington
High School, was the speaker of
the afternoon. He reveiwed eight
een plays that he had seen on
Broadway last summer and dis
cussed some of the leading men
and women of the plays. Mr.
Najjar was an interesting speaker
and the group appreciated his
discussion.
After the meeting the hostess
I served refreshments.

Salem WSCS Has
Meeting at Home

the members of the Salem WSCS
met at the home of Mrs. Hoyt
Bailey for their monthly meet
ing.
Twelve members were present
and the Rev. and Mrs. Trevor
Turner were visitors, Rev. Tur
ner bringing the program for
the month. His theme was “Re
membering God’s Blessings" and
each one present enjoyed his talk
very much.
Miss Irene Smith had charge
of the devotion using the first
ten verses of the fourteenth
Chapter of John as a scriptural
background. Mrs, Douglas Yan
cey led in the opening prayer.
Minutes of the September
meeting were read and approved
and the treasurer's report was
given
During the business session it
was voted to give SIO.OO to the
Newton County Hospital to be
applied to the linens for the
hospifal.
Mrs. G. W. Ramsey made a
report on the WSCS Seminar that
was held at Monroe on Septem
ber 14th. Also Mrs. Ramsey
stressed the importance of the
lo al WSCS members attendance
of the Spiritual Life Retreat that
the Decatur-Oxford District
WSCS will hold at Salem on
Tuesday October 19 beginning
at 10:00 o'clock a. m Mrs. Ram
sey also announced the week of
Prayer and Self Denial program
for the week of October 15 to
to 31.

receipt of letters from the Ko
rean and Brazilian missionaries
whom the Salem WSCS have
aided this year, thanking the
church and the WSCS for their
aid.

The Wesleyan Service Guild I
of the First Methodist Church
met on Tuesday night, October
_5, 1954. at the home of Mrs.
Betty Freeman. There were 23
members and one visitor pres
ent. Mrs. Mary Frances Wofford
and Mrs. Willette Murrill were
welcomed as new members.
The meeting was opened with
the singing of "Showers of Bless
ings.” Mrs. Beth Meadors read
the scripture which was the 14th
chapter of John. Reports were
heard from the Secretary and
the Treasurer.
It was announced that the
Week of Prayer and Self-Denial I
would be observed October 25-
31.

Wright, was then introduced.

4 at 7:30, the Laura Thompson
| Circle of the Porterdale Baptist
j Church met at he home of Mrs.
j Alvin Jeffares on Hemlock. The

with pink dahlias and lavendar
ageratum.
After a prayer by Mrs. Alice
Patterson, the minutes were read
and approved. Fifteen members
answered to the roll call.
Mrs. Lillian Bowden was in
■ charge of an inspiring program.
Mrs Allen Redd gave an interest
ing story on Singapore. Mrs. Kate
Patterson read from the book of
Genesis and then conducted a
quiz on what she had read. The
group sang "Our Best”. Mrs. Redd
and Mrs. M. B. Shaw were re
quested to sing a duet. They v"wy
graciously consented. The clos
ing prayer was led by Mrs. Bow
den.
