GOVERNOR TALMADGE greets Mrs. J. W. Brown Sr., wife of the late Dr. Brown of Conyers
and mother of Dr. J. M. Brown Jr. of Conyers, at dedication services held Sunday in Covington
for the Newton County Hospital. B. B. Snow, secretary of the Newton County Hospital Authority,

ties and thanked them and ex
pressed a sincere thanks to Dr.
R. C. Williams, director of the
Hospital Service of Georgia, for
I the cooperation which he had
1 given them.
Mr. Snow then introduced
Governor Herman Talmadge as
one of the greatest governors
in the history of Georgia and
certainly one of the greatest
builders of all times in the state.
Governor Talmadge received a
high round of applause from the
hundreds of citizens. He stated
that by January 1 of next year
the State of Georgia will have
completed over 70 million dol
lars in hospitals and clinics dur
ing the term of his office. ,
Governor Talmadge expressed
pleasure in having the opportun
ity to come to Newton County
for the dedicating of this mag
nificent structure. He called at
tention to the fact that during
his campaign of 1948 he had
promised the voters that the
first act of his administration
when elected governor would be
the activation of a hospital au
thority for the State of Georgia.
He said this law had been on
the books more than two years
and had never been acted be
cause the state would not pro
vide the money.
Governor Talmadge said this
was the 76th hospital he had
dedicated and it was his aim
to bring hospital care within
the reach of every on of the
3 1/2 million citizens of Georgia.
H? said the Newton County
Hospital may not be as large
but there was none any better
equipped than the building we
have and none more modern. He
called attention to the fact that
the building cost $559,000. He
said $186,000 of this was a grant
from the Federal Government,
$186,000 from a grant from the
State of Georgia and the balance
raised by the citizens of Newton

Newton County Citizens Urged
To Exercise Caution in Woods
BY CARL DENNIS
FOREST RANGER
Newton County citizens are
I urged to maintain extreme cau
tion during the current dangerous
fall forest fire danger season.
The coming of fall always has
meant that we must take added
precautions against forest fires,
for it is at this season of the year
County through a bond issue of
$150,000 and balance by contri
butions. He said this was a fine
example of the State, Federal
and local governments working
together in harmony. He also
paid a tribute to the Negro popu
lation of Georgia and called at
tention to the fact that the Negro
population of Covington had
raised $6,000 to build their own
health clinic but when the New
ton County Hospital Authority
was inaugurated they agreed to
donate this amount to the New
ton County Hospital being the
first to make a contribution.
Governor Talmadge said he
had increased the appropriation
of the hospital from four million
to twelve million a year. Be
sides the clinics and hospitals
wh’ch have 'been erected, the
state has purchased mobiles
which he Intends to send in
every county and especially to
a’l the schools where children
may be examined to ascertain if
they have any disease of any
kind and, if so, see that they
are turned over to local ohysi
cians for treatment.
Governor Talmadge then eited

The situation this year is even
• more dangerous for here in New
, ton County we have just com
, pleted one of our direst summers
in recent years. This year the
forest fii^e situation was danger
ous before the fall eriod even be
gan, and it is doubly so now.
There has been very little, and in
i some parts of the County, no re
' lief from the drought.
While no one can estimate
fully the severity of the fall
forest fire season in Newton
County, the County Forestry
Unit holds to the belief that,
“Preparedness is the best method
of attack.
Unit personnel are maintain
ing a constant watch for the tell
tale wisps of smoke which might
mean that a wildfire has started
in one of our. County’s 102,700
.acres of forestland. We need the
aid and cooperation of the public
however, in detecting these fires
if we are to make a considerable
decrease in our forest fire losses
this year.
All persons detecting wildfire
flames or smoke which might in
dicate such flames are requested
to telephone the County Foresty
Unit Headquarters. Unit' person
