Newton Coach Earl Hoffmeis-’i
ter called on Sherry Campbell
for a starting role last Saturdayl
night against Monroe and the
slender Ram put on a scintillat
ing performance to bring the
local quint their tenth victory
of the season, against only two
losses, 48-41._Newton’s girls alsol
won their tenth victory in thel
curtain raiser by a 45 to 35
score.
The boys game was a thriller
once the game rolled into the
fourth aquarter. Charles Sher
wood, playing a good offensive!
as well as fine defensive game,
fouled out in the first minute
of the final period with Newton
in front by a contfortable 42-30
score. With Newton’s big-boy on
the sidelines Campbell took over
the show and immediately went
to work with the aid of Curly
Boyd, Harry Curtis, Billy Will
iams and Joe Shrap.
Campbell cleaned the boards
on both ends of the court in
the fourth quarter and drew foul
shots on three occasions, making
good on four straight points for
the margin of victory. Campbell’s
accuracy, along with the two
points made from the charity
line by Curly Boyd, were the
only points made in the last quar
ter by the Newton team. Mean
while the Monroe boys with
Louis Studdard hitting three
consecutive field goals, kept
pecking awak at the Newton
lead. With only a minute™and
40 seconds left the Rams were
ahead only two points, 43-41.
In the girls game it was the
excellent work of Harriet Chest
nut that brought the win to the
local sextet. She made 17 points
and played the entire game.
Chestnut made seven field goals
and three fouls for her total.
Substitute Josephine Heard had
14 points to closely follow Chest
nut in the point department.
However, the leading scorer in
the game was Jean Bailey of
Monroe who sank 18.
Leading at the half by a scant
point 18-17 Newton came through
with 16 points in the third pe
riod to take a 34-25 margin at the
three-quarter pole. Chestnut, Jo
Heard and Betty Masten com
bined to put the local team com
fortably out-front in that canto.

Coach Hoffmeister said before
the Jackson game that his girls
would be at a disadvantage on
the Jackson court with the
rounded back-boards which the
Newton team does not see often.
He said it would hurt our chances
bylo points and it did just about
that. However, one cannot dis
count the fine performance by
the Jackson forwards, especially
Jane Raven and Ann Pettigrew.
. Sherry Campbell is coming
into his own as a valuable boy

the four recent games played by

bounced the Newton County sex
tet 48 to 36 to avenge their only
loss of the season last Friday
night in the Jackson gym. The
visiting Ram boys evened the
count for the evening by out
scoring the Red Devils 68-57.
Newton’s girls scored only
seven field goals in the game
but late in the second quarter
they led the home forces 12 to
11, mainly on the accurate foul
shooting of Harriet Chestnut who
had ten charity tosses in the first
two quarters. Miss Chestnut had
18 points for her night's work.
Jackson’s performance was
near the perfect mark for the
last half as their three forwards
Ann Pettigrew, Jane and Anne

Jane Raven and Pettigrew
scored 24 and 22 points respee

victory by the superb guarding
of Mary Greer and Betty Jones.

the only loss of the season was

shooting percentages from the
field were: Jackson 42.9%3 New=

15 field goals for 35 shots while
the visiting Newton team had
