PORTERDALE — The Maud
King Girl Reserves met in Mrs.
Ellington’s room on January 17,
1955. Patsy Stapp, our president,
called the meeting to order. The
roll was called. There were 29
girls present. Twenty-four had
attended Sunday school or church,
Daisy Cagle gave a very in
terest program of songs, poems,
and stories.

Club Present at January Meeting
PORTERDALE — The Wo
man’s Club room in the Porter
Gymnasium at Porterdale was
an active place on Monday even
ing, January 17, at seven-thirty
'when 96 members and twelve
ivisitors arrived for the monthly
meeting of the club. Mrs. E. L.
Digby, the president, welcomed
the members and guests. Miss
Jordye Tanner introduced the
apprentice teachers who are liv
ing in Porterdale at the present
time. Mrs. S. O. Lindsey and
Miss Mary Brown, former mem
bers from Forest Park and Ma
con, respectively, were especi
ally recognized. There were other
guests from Covington, Oxford,
and Salem Community.
Mrs. Grady Bowden, the pro
gram chairman, introduced Dr.
S. L. Hardman, who brought a
lovely devotional which was a
real challenge. The Arthur God
frey Calendar Show was present
ed for the program. A huge cal
endar featuring the twelve
months with pictures symbolic of
the month’s emphasis extended
across the entire front of the
room. As each month was an
nounced by Miss Mae Hardman,
M. C,, the young artists of New
ton County stepped through the
page of the calendar. Those par
ticipating “in the program which
was produced by Mr. Johnny
Farmer and Mrs. Bowden’s com
mittee, Mrs. James Brooks and

Fidelis Matrons Class Meets at Home

The Fidelis Matrons Class of
the First Baptist Church held
its regular meeting January 19
at the lovely home of Mrs. T. D.
Meadors at Oxford.
Mrs. W. E. Thornley presided
in the absence of the president,
Mrs. Pritchett, who was sick.
Mrs. Alexander brought a good
devotional reading the first part
of the 12th chapter of Hebrews.
The thoughts she brought out
was that we are so prone to de
pend on our own strength when
our Savious is so ready to be
with us in our every need. This
year we should live closer to
Him. She then read a lovely
poem “The Needs. of my Life.”
Mrs. S. J. Hays led in prayer.
The secretary called the roll,
and seventeen were present. The
minutes were read and all offi
cers gave their reports also the
quarterly report from the group
captains were good Mrs. Nunn
reported a good number of cards
and notes to the sick and bereav
ed.
The class voted to have the
plates again this year so as to
replenish the treasury and bring
cheer to someone at Christmas.
- The committee previously ap
pointed to serve the GSCW choir
January 30 were reminded to
"meet at the Legion Hall at the
)time appointed.

the Emory at Oxford Campus on

Mrs. Paty’s explanation of the
nature of the meeting.

business session. Minutes were
read by Mrs. J. W. King, after
which correspondence was giv
en. Mrs. J. T. Elkins gave the
report of the treasury. Names
of award winners in the Christ
mas Decorating Contest were
read by Mrs. Digby. The Con
stitution and By-Laws were
read.
Mrs. Bessie Bruce reported
that three new selections had
been added to the library dur
ing the last month.
Mrs. Terrell Johnson, the Pro
ject Chairman, announced im
portant information concerning
the annual calendar project. Her
assistants were named and each
read the list of her group. April
1, is to be the deadline for the
calendars. Mrs. James Adams
called a meeting of the AD com
mittee which she is leading.
Mrs. Myrtice Wheeler, a guest,
received the attendance award.
Mrs. Sam Savage became a
new member.
Committees for the February
meeting were named by the
President as follows:
