Mr. Belmont Dennis,
Covington NEWS,
Dear Mr. Dennis,
Enclosed you will find a resolution passed
by the Covington Ministerial Association and
delivered on last Wednesday to Mr. Bates.
Sincerely,
J. H. Barton, Jr.
A RESOLUTION PASSED BY THE NEW
TON COUNTY MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION,
to be presented to the Commissioner of Roads
and Revenues of this County, and to the Cov
ington Newspapers.
We, the ministers of the Newton County
Ministerial Association, meeting on call, Sep
tember 26, 1955, wish to make the following
statement:
We, individually and as an Associgtion,
wish to express our dissapproval of the recent
action of the Newton County Grand Jury pro
posing that the county Commissioner license
the sale of beer in this county.
As ministers of the Gospel we are all too
often confronted with the ruin that comes upon
those who are the victims of beverage alcohol.
To seek governmental revenues from the ruin
of our people is clearly immoral.
We.urge our Commissioner to stand against
this proposal. And we hereby pledge to him
our support in such a stand.

Dear Mr. Bates:
This petition is signed by us as citizens of
Newton County for the following reasons:
First, we are opposed to the recent decision
of the grand jury recommending the sale of
packaged beer in the food stores of Covington.
Secondlv, we are opposed to any proposal
suggesting that the welfare institutions of our
county be operated from taxes and/or sales
resulting from the sale of intoxicants (as was
suggested in regard to Newton County Hospital
by the grand jury).
Thirdly, we are opposed to the sale, legal
‘or illegal, of any intoxicating beverages in our
county as being detrimental to the welfare of
the people and counter to Christian principles
We appeal to you as Commissioner of
Newton County to continue to do all within
your power to prevent the sale of alcoholic
beverages in Newton County.

Dear Editor,
Congratulations on your courageous stand
against the sale of beer in Newton County,
The revenue received from such would be com
pletely worthless when compared to the human
suffering and moral destruction that would
eventually come.
We deplore even the thought of having
beer on the grocer’s shelf, where young children
would associate it with every day food, and
teen agers would be more tempted than ever
to drink.
Newton, we dare say, is as prosperous as
any county in Georgia with its fine civic build
ings and organizations, schools both colored
and white, an excellent hospital and many other
things. None of this has come from beer rev
enue. Are we of so little faith as to believe
prosperity will not continue without it now?
Sincerely, ¢
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Coody.
The Men's Bible Class of High Point Baptist
Church appreciates the opportunity to let the
people of Newton County know how we feel
about the action of the recent Grand Jury rec
ommendation that licenses be issued for the
sale of beer in our county. This class has passed
a resolution that opposes this action vigorously.
We intend to use every means at our disposal
to keep our county free from this evil, and
stand ready to join any church or group of
Christians who are determined as we are to
fight this evil,

The Covington NEWS,

Dear Editor:
I wish to congratulate vou on the strong
stand that your pa'per is taking against the
issuing of licenses for the sale of beer in New
ton County. Although the present grand jury is
composed of many of the leading citizens of
our County, I feel sure that many of these
good men on the jury have not prayed about
their stand to recommend the issuing of licenses
to the stores and other places that might sell
beer legally. Christian men and women should
take their problems to the Lord and let Him
guide them in their actions. I do not believe
that our Lord would sanction the sale of beer
in our County. We should measure all of our
actions by the standard “What would Jesus do?”
We do know that the revenue that could
come from the sale of beer would be greatly
offset by the weakening of the moral standards
of our people. This would apply particularly to
the young people of our community. Frankly, I
believe that the good people of Newton County
would gladly sanction an increase of the taxes
that they now pay in order to take care of
their Newton County Hospital that has just
lately received a national recognition. Again,
I say the people of Newton County would
rather pay additional taxes than even allow the
taxes on beer that might accrue from this
source carry an obligation that is so sacred as
a hospital. Our church people love those institu
tions of mercy such as hospitals, orphan homes,
homes for the aged. and other good causes such
as the Red Cross and many other causes that
could be named.
Let the people know what it takes to take
care of these causes. They always respond in
a big way when they are called on. They do not
need beer tax money to pay their moral obliga
tions.

Mr. Tom Bates,
Dear Sir:
May I add a few words to the many which
I think you have received in regard to the
sale of beer in our fair eity?
I moved inside Covington City limits some
vears ago, loved the place, settled down here,
and have watched the growth and expansion
and have been proud along with others when
our Beautiful Hospital was built. We were
proud and happy along with others, but this
idea of helping support that fine Christian in
stitution with taxes from the sale of beer is
awful. Remember the man a few weeks ago
that had been dismissed from our hospital, how
through our city news he praised the Christian
efficience of our hospital, Feeling the warmth
of Christianity about him surely prompied his
warm words of praise and how would such as
he feel if we allowed the, hospital to be sup
ported by beer taxes. Most of us are old enough
to know how this act would belittle us in sight
of God. Think how this one thing could spoil
the beauty and quietness of our homes and
cauce children to go without sufficient food
and clothes, yet they cannot understand why

and can't help themselves yet they will be
many that will suffer. Lets please not put any
more temptations in our people's paths where
the temptation may cause them, when they go
in our stores to buy Beer instead of Bread.
Please Mr. Bates we supported and helped

Mr. Belmont Dennis, -
Editor Covington NEWS, :
Dear Mr. Dennis: F
We the members of the Charles Porter
Bible Class voted in order that it might be
known that we are against the sale of beer in
Newton County and are opposed to the decision
recently made by the Grand Jury recommend
ing the sale of beer in Newton County in food
stores.
We are also opposed to the plan that the
Revenue from the sale of beer be used for the
support of Newton County Hospital.
We consider that beer sold in our county
would be hurtful to the moral welfare of the
citizens of the county, espeeially io our young
people who need our protection instead of en
couraging such things as would be detrimental
to their moral welfare.
We agree whole heartedly in the stand you
are taking Mr. Dennis in this matter and cer
tainly feel it is right and we shall go forward.
Yours very truly,
Charles Porter Bible Class,

Dear Mr. Bates,
We the undersigned members of the Red
Oak Methodist Church want to congratulate you
on the good things you have done for our
county. Especially do we appreciate the stand
yvou have taken in regard to keeping intoxicat
ing beverages from being sold in the county.
We know you will continue to do what is
your Christian duty. We would like to very
briefly but firmly state in this petition our
opposition to tbe recent action of the grand
jury proposal to sell packaged beer in the food
stores of Covington, Nor do we agree that our
benevolent institutions (in this case the New
ton County Hospital) should be operated on
funds derived from the tax or sale of beer or
other intoxicating beverages. It would be mock
ery and morally unethical to operate a hospital
from funds derived from the product which in
so many cases places patients in the hospital.
We are opposed to the sale, legally, or
illegally, of any intoxicating beverages within
Newton County and we petition you to con-

Dear Mr. Dennis, i
One of the saddest statements that I have
read recently I read when 1 opened “The
Covington NEWS” and read, “Grand Jury
Recommends Sale of Packaged Beer.”
Covington is my home town and in the |
past I have been proud to say 1 was froml
Covington, Many times when I have told people |
_ Covington was my home town, the remark has |
| come, “Covington is such a clean, nice town.”i
| Why is it clean? No beer is sold there is one
| big reason. f
-f I bear on my body the marks of beer. The |
| man who ran into the car in which I was riding |
and but for the miraculous power of God would
have ended my life, had been drinking beer. l
Yes, you say they are going to get it.
They will not get it if it isn’t made available |
| to them. The more available it is the more they |
| will drink and the more people will drink it.
The Bible says no drunkard shall enter!
heaven. I would like to ask those jurors if they '
want to send people to hell. Beer begins paving
the way. |
If the christian people of Newton Countyi
would rise up and demand that right triumphi‘
beer will never be sold ‘in any place in the |
county. May it not be said of the christians;
of Newton County that they were indifferent |
but may they rise up against this evil and |
t fight until the victory is won. ‘g
| It is my prayer that Covington and New- |
’ ton County may keep beer out. 1\
