Beautiful Fences
Fences used to be ugly, but to
day architects have introduced a
wondrous array of styles and pat
terns which make these struc
tures things of charm and rare
beauty. Popular lumber like west
ern red cedar and Douglas fir can
j be bought in many standard sizes
. at most lumber yards and they
lend themselves to such intrigu
ing fence designs as the basket
i weave, the louvered panels, es
| tate-type fences and those with
jail sorts of niches and compart
ments for flower pots, figurines
and decorative crockery.

By Mrs. H. D. Lancaster
Well, time marches on. This is
the last summer holiday for 19-
56. It has been a beautiful one
and people are taking advantage !
of it, judging from the traffic on
the highways.
But in an imperfect world, j
there cannot be perfect events, |
so amid the gaiety and pleasures j
of every .weekend holiday
there runs a thread of tragedy,
bringing death, sorrow and
heartache to people here and
there. In this modern age with
power at our finger tips we
grow careless. We have an urge
ti hurry and what results?
Death on the highways. Truly,
on such days as Labor Day,
death is not taking a holiday.
The grim reaper seizes such op
portunities to get in his deadly
work. All the appeals made by
the highway commissioner warn
ing us of the hazards and perils
of the holiday, fall on deaf ears;
already the death toll is mount
ing.
A week or so ago, the Coving
ton NEWS carried an editorial
in which they pleaded with peo
ple not to litter the highways
with papers, one thing and an
other. They called them “litter
bugs” that do such things. We
thought it to be very timely
advice, for here on highway 162
everything from big sheets of
paper or used picnic plates and
cups, down to drink bottles and
cans litter the shoulder of the
road. It’s a disgrace to a civilized
community. As for us we do not
like cluttered highways any bet
ter that we du cluttered lawns
or cluttered house.
By the way, the young people
of County Line as well as the
; adult members, appreciate the
j beautiful gesture of Mrs. Dennis
j in regard to the new piano and
' many thanks to her for all the
nice kind words she wrote.
