Covington Woman's Club Hears
Don Ballard on 'Citizenship'
The first fall meeting of the
Covington Woman's Club was
held at the library on Tuesdav
afternoon, September 3. with 32
members present.
Mrs. Hugh L. King, president,
tailed the meeting to order. Tie
group joined in singing, America,
with Miss Eva Gardner as accom
panist. Miss Sallie May Sockwell
led the pledge to the flag fol
lowed by the Club Collect.
Mrs. King extended a warm wel
come to all members and guests.
Mrs. Wolfe from Washington, D.
C. and Mrs. T. L. Wagner were
visiters.
The club stood in silent prayer
for a minute and Mrs Thornley
.prayed a sweet praver a' memor
ial to our recently departed mem
bers, Mrs. G. W. Caldwell and
Mrs. W. F. Lee.
The following committees were
appointed to draw up resolutions
on the death of these beloved
members. Mrs. W. E. Thornley,

deeply grateful to Mrs. H. H.

8, for selling these books. Mrs.
Mobley also reparted that books
were being placed in the library
in memory of Mrs. Caldwell and
Mrs. Lee.
The club was delighted to have
our newly ejected representative.
Mr. Donald Ballard, speak to us
on “Citizenship”. He stressed the
importance of getting out to vote
also jury service for women. Dur
ing the social hour dainty sand
wiches, cokes and punch were
served. A lovely arrangement of
pink gladioli and lavender asters
formed the central piece for the
tea tables. Miss Vivian Bower
served punch. Other members of
the committee w'ere Mrs. H. G.
Smith, Mrs. W. E. Thornley, Miss
Florence Bower and Mrs. L. A.
Patrick.

During a pleasant social hour,
ice cream and cookies were serv
ed by Mrs. Costley.

Family Get-Together Held Wednesday
At Cabin of Mr. and Mrs. Greer
Captain and Mrs. Jones Epps
and children, Jones Jr., Gene,
Julianne and Susan were honor
guests at a family get-together
at the cabin of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Greer at Hayston last Wednesday
evening.
Delicious barbecue and stew,
salads and cakes were enjoyed.
Captain Epps and family will
leave on September 29 for Germ
any.

The B. W. C. of the First Bap
! tist Church met Monday evening,
September 3, at the home of Mrs.
J. B. Dial, with Mrs. Frances
Allen as co-hostess. There were
fourteen members and six visit
ors present, including Mrs. Fred
Kitchens, Miss Louise Reeves,
Mrs. Reuben Rutledge, Mrs. G. J.
Reeves, Mrs. Bill Kitchens and
Mrs. Edgar Callaway.
The meeting was opened with
prayer, and Mrs. Bert Adams pre
sided over the business session.

Belcher Circle of the Julia A.
Porter Methodist Church chose
the church for their meeting
place on Tuesday evening, Sep
tember 4, at seven-thirty o'clock.
Seventeen menbers and four
visitors were present. Mrs. Lola
Drennon was welcomed back in

( after spending two years in
! Germany. Miss Ethel Belcher and
( Mrs. Elon Jeffries were visitors,

will gladly take any orders.
Mr. Ben Shropshire was named
by the ladies to be their shut-in
, for special remembrance during
! the coming year.

PORTERDALE — The Laura
Thompson Circle of Porterdale
Baptist Church met in the home
of Mrs. Nett e Williams on Pop
lar Street on September 3, at
seven-thirty o’clock. The meet
ing was opened with prayer led
by Mrs. Alberta Barnes. Visitors
were Mrs. Ines Buckalew, Mrs.
Joe Burch, and Mrs. Virgil Nor
wood.
Mrs. Archie Patterson, co
chairman, asked for the roll call
and minutes of the August meet
ing. Reports were made from the
treasurer and the w'ays and
means committee. Community
mission work for the ensuing
month was discussed and direct
ed. Mrs. Patterson asked ths
floral committee to revise the

on Tuesday evening. September
4. at seven-thirty o’clock. The
meeting opened with the singing
of the hymn, “Love Lifted Me”.
Prayer was led by Mrs. Frank
Day.
Names of sick people to be re
membered with convalescent
cards were mentioned. Mrs. Geor
gia Piper was chosen as the
shut-in for the circle.

o'clock Mrs. Sadie Mays, Chair
man. opened the meeting with

22:7, and Miss Sadie Polson led
in prayer.
Miss Lottie Mae Polson in
troduced the program which told
of how the W. M. U. work had
grown as women were led by
“Our King Christ Jesus.” The
hymn “Lead On. O King Eternal”
was used and scripture was

were presented on the program.

Hornbuckle, Lila Jo Callaway,
Faye Greer, Terry Rutledge,
Michael Costley, Carolyn Camp
bell, and Pam Smith. A solo.
“Lead On, O King Eternal”, by
Mrs. W. E. Smith contributed
much to the interesting program.

Heard-Mixon Home Demonstration Club
The Heard-Mixon Home Dem
onstration Club held their regu
lar monthly meeting on Thursday
afternoon, September 6 at the
Home Economics Bldg.
The meeting was called to or
der by the president, Mrs. E. M.
McCart, opening with the club
creed followed by the club song
in unison.
The devotional was conducted
by Mrs. Bill Aiken.
During the business session, the

in honor of Mrs. Robert Roland
last Wednesday evening at the
home of Mrs. Roland’s mother,

cent bride, the former Miss
Janice Brown.
