"Behind The *
§| S r
Scene at Band
| Contributing to the success of
any organization is the group
. working “behind the scenes” to
| keep things going smoothly. The
|band is very fortunate in having
%la group of industrious “behind
Ithe scene” workers who spend
“ many hours working for the band.
‘ The band managers, Joe Rainey
'and Wayne Scarborough, are re
sponsible for issuing band equip
| ment to band students. On trips
they are responsible for music,
|stands, and other equipment that
| the bdnd will need for a progran.
| Even during the busy football
season when the band is rehears
'ing for Friday night shows, time
|is taken a few mornings each
| week for the band to site read
|a piece of music which will be
‘used later during concert season.
| This means the librarians, Janis
|Farr and Corra Costley, must
have the music out each morning
for the band to play and then
must see that it is put away that
‘afternoon. A filing system for
'the music has helped speed this
task.
| Band chaplain. Frances Mitch
ell, brings an inspiring devotional
each morning te help band mem
bers start the day off right. Also
on Friday night she leads the
band in a short devotion before
the game. 4
The Band Boosters Club, com.-
posed of band parents and friends
of the band, is backing the band
{ln numerous ways, seeing that it
‘has things necessary to its pro
|gram and also helping with such
|things as band parties.
| So you can see that the band,
lunder the capable direction of
Joseph T. Smith, and with the
‘backing of so many interested
people, is trying to make this a
1. top year for Newton Band!

Forestry Unif Goes 37 Days
Without Fire in Newfon-Rockdale
. Due to the excellent coopera
{tion of the people of Newton
land Rockdale Counties the
| Newton Rockdale Forestry Unit
;has just ended a period of 37
|days without a forest fire.
| “The fire season is upon us”
Ranger Jones, said, “and a re
| cord. of this type ai this danger
%ous time of year is really some
|thing to be proud of, lets all try
[just a little harder during the
icoming fire season months and
!set a record that will be hard to
| match”. “A record of this type,”
{Jones went on to say, “is possi
'ble only when everyone does his
ler her part in preventing the de
| struction of this valuable na
tural resource”.
} The end came Sunday, October
128 when a fire burned about half
an acre of forest land near Col
'lum Road in Newton County. It
'is believed this fire was started
| by the discarded match or ciga
‘rette of some person who was
|out in the woods for pleasure.
i “It is safe to assume,” Jones
|said, “that this person did not
'intend to leave the forest in a
charded state of destruction and
?proberly dosen’t even know he
| caused a fire”. “This,” he went
Thursday, November 1, 1358
on to say, “is the reason we must
all be careful with fire in the
woods, one careless moment and
years of natures work can be de
stroyed.” This period of “thirty
seven fire free days’” was possi
ble only through the cooperation
of landowners of the two coun
ties. “Prompt action on the part
of the people kept three grass
fires during this period from
spreading to nearby forest land,”
Jones stated.
Everyone is urged to be eviar
careful during the next few fire
'season months, and report forest
fires promptly by calling: Days—

and Sundays—Covington 7416,
