United Daughter of Confederacy Meet
At the Home of Mrs. T. Alvin Rape
The Covington* chapter. United
Daughters of the Confederacy
held its October meeting at the
home of Mrs. T. A. Rape with
a good number present. The
pledge and salute to the flags
were led by Miss Sally May
Sockwell, and a prayer follow
ed.
Several objects of business
were taken up and discussed.
The program for the afternoon
was “Exhibit of Confederate
stamps and money.’” After a
short discussion on this sub
ject reports of the Division con
vention were given by Miss Sal
ly May Sockwell, Mrs. C. C.
King and Mrs. R. M. Mobley :
Sandwiches and punch were j
served by the hostess at the
conclusion of the meeting while '
a social hour was enjoyed.

PORTERDALE — The Young
Adult Class of the Porterdale
Baptist Church welcomed Mr.
C. L. Bone as their visitor on
Sunday, November 11, 1956.
There were 25 present and 16
that were one hundred per cent
in attendance. Mr. Cowan, the
teacher, brought an excellent
lesson.

Marriage Date Set for November 24th

announce the engagement and
approaching marriage of their
daughter, Miss Shirley Annette
; McGiboney, to Mr. Bobby Ray

Miss McGiboney is a graduate
of Newton County High School.
Mr. Black is a graduate of
'Conyers High School and is

FILM TEACHES LESSON
Fayetteville, N.C. — After see
ing a cowboy film at a local movie
house, a 21-year-old escaped con
vict surrendered to police. He said
the movie convinced him that
crime does not pay.

Methodist Met Home Mrs. M. G. Beam
PORTERDALE — The Ethel
Belcher Circle of the W. S. C. S.
of the Julia A. Porter Methodist
Church met in the home of Mrs.
M. G. Beam, Sr. on Tuesday
evening. November 6, at seven
thirty o’clock with 13 members
and two visitors present. The
meeting was opened with prayer
led by Mrs. Cleo Hatfield.
After the business session, Mrs.
Hatfield, program chairman, in
troduced Mrs. A. J. Peters who
gave the fourth chapter of the
study book for the year’s study.
The title of the study was “The
Message of the Church”, She

Mrs. Jake Hunt on Washington Street
PORTERDALE — Mrs. Jake
Hunt entertained members of
the Annie Lummus Circle at her
home on Washington Street in
Covington, Georgia for their
meeting on Tuesday evening,
November 6, at 7:30. Mrs. Joe
Davis presided in the absence
of Mrs. W. C. Ivey, circle chair
man. The opening prayer was
led by Mrs. J. B. Doster. Ten
members and one visitor were
present.

very interesting. It was decided

Sunday. Mrs. Newcomb is hav
ing a week's visit with the
Hendersons. Mr. Newcomb left
Monday for Macon, on business,
and will rejoin his wife and
the Hendersons Friday evening.

tend the Ga. Tech-Alabama foot
ball game in Atlanta.

in Atlanta Sunday.

Wedding of Miss Joyce Palmer And
Walker Fincher to be Solemnized Friday
Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Palmer an
nounce the engagement of their
daughter, Miss Joyce Palmer, to
Walker Fincher, son of Mr. and
Mrs. R. W. Fincher.
Miss Palmer, a Newton High
Graduatp of the Class of 1955,
was a class officer and a member
of the Scribbler Staff. At the
present time she is affiliated with
the Life Insurance Company of
Georgia.
Mr. Fincher, who also attended
Newton County High School, pri
or to his entrance into the U. S.
Navy, has served in both China
and Japan.

tives of the betrothed pair are
cordially invited to be present
at the wedding which will be
solemnized at Porterdale Baptist
Church, Friday evening at 7:30,

ure at a miscellaneous shower at
which Mrs. Jerry Lassiter and
Mrs. Byron Williams were co
hostesses Saturday evening, at
Lovejoy Educational Building on
Jackson Road.
Mrs. Byron Williams greeted
guests at the door of the spaci
ous room. The white overlaid
gift table was heaped with a
bevy of beautifully wrapped
shower gifts, and had as its cen
terpiece a white container of
white pompon chrysanthemums
and plumosis fern, from which
emerged a dainty lace parasol,
indicative of the shower theme.
