Mrs. Swann's Group
We had much to tell on re
turning to school today. Every
one enjoyed Thanksgiving Day.
Many of us visited our
grandparents. Some of us
had Thanksgiving dinner at home
with grandparents coming from
a distance to visit with us. We
were thankful and happy for our
homes and for the many good
things we have.
Last week, Frances Thomas
and Lorie Hegwood celebrated
their sixth birthdays together.
I heir mothers gave us a party
and such a nice party too! They
brought cookies, ice cream and
candy with balloons for favors.
Pretty birthday napkins and
flowers decorated the tables.
Frances’ mother brought in to
show us the cutest little puppy,
which was a gift to Frances from
a friend in Atlanta. We thank
Mrs. Hegwood and Mrs. Thomas
lor this delightful surprise party.
We called it “The Twin” Birth
<'ay Party.
This- morning we had three
isitors. Slade Exley’s mother
and grandmother Davis came.
Also Rufus Yarbrough's mother.
We were glad to have them come
id see us work at school.
Wayne Harvey is sick. We
nope that he will soon be well.

Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. Willson and
Mrs. Harper had a TV program
which we enjoyed very much.
The housekeepers are Cathy
Price and Johnny Bates. The
leaders are Treva Day and
Johnny Bates. We had 20c today
for stars. We are learning how
. to look up words in a dictionary.
Mrs. Few brought some flow
ers today. Today Betty Benton
got sick. We are studying about
Pilgrims and Indians.
Today we drew a picture of a
boat. We are enjoying school very
much. We enjoyed Thanksgiving
holidays. We have learned a
Thanksgiving poem.
This is the first part:
THANKSGIVING DAY
By Lydia Maria Child
Over the river and through the
woods,
To grandfathers house we go,
The Horse knows the way,
To carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted

•A NEWS
By Ginger Knight, Billy Ellis
We enjoyed the two days vaca
tion for Thanksgiving last week.
We hope everyone had a very
nice Thanksgiving.
We had our six weeks tests
last week and got our report
cards on Wednesday.
Several girls from the 8-th
grade went to Atlanta and saw
Elvis Presley’s first picture
‘‘Love Me Tender.” They are
Patsy Loyd, Mary Anne Har
well, Carol Bryant, Marilyn Mc-
Kay, Beverly McDonald and
Helen Masten.
We're planning a football
party for Friday night, Novem
ber 30.
FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Ramsey's
This is National Book Week.
We have enjoyed looking at
books on our library table which
our teacher borrowed from the
Newton County Library.
We have stressed the care we
should take of books. Books are
our friends and we will try to
treat them as our friends.
One of our little girls, Frances
Skelton, has a new baby sister
named Nancy.
Jimmy Brasewell brought two
beautiful large white Christmas
candles made by his aunt.
Margie Durden brought some
pretty flowers, which wc have
enjoyed.
We did not have any birthdays
in November, but we have five
birthdays in December. They are
Sheila Cartledge on December 2;
Marcia Elizer on the 4th; Kathy
Pratt on the Bth; Terry McCuller
on the 11th and Margie Durden
on December 12.
We enjoyed our Thanksgiving
holidays but everyone seemed
glad to get back to school.
We like the puzzles in our
Weekly Reader each week. This
week’s puzzle helped us with
initial consonant sounds. Last
week we had rhyming words. We
have been listening to words
that rhyme in poetry.
We enjoyed some books our
teacher ordered for us from the
National Dairy Council. They
were about “Milk for you and
Me.” We liked the pictures and
could read many of the words.
We enjoy our cold milk each
day at school. Some of us have
gained weight since school start
ed. Could it be the milk?
Our attendance for November
was 98.41 percent. We have 21
pupils who have not been absent
or tardy this year. We are proud
of this record.
We learned a song today. It
was “When Santa Comes Down
the Chimney.” It won’t be long
and we are looking forward to
it .You should see our big smiles
and sparking eyes when we men
tion Christmas. We plan to write
to Santa Claus real soon.

According to a Lions spokes
man, 50 percent of the Auction's
proceeds will be used in the
Club’s major project, “Eyesight
Conservation Program”. This
program, conducted under the
direction of the Lions sponsored
“Georgia Lions Lighthouse, Inc.”
organized in 1949 in a program
submitted by a blind Lion Club
member, has rendered invalu
able service to Newton County,
through the presentation of an
Eye Testing Machine to the
Newton County School System,
for checking students’ eyes; de
fraying the cost of four correc
tive eye operations with result
ing normal vision, three correc
tive treatment cases, numerous
glasses for children needing fi
nancial aid for same, a Talking
Bible complete with records and
recordplayer for use of the
blind, and transportation for and
examination of an appreciable
number of eye cases.
This within itself is a splendid
record in Covington Lions Club
four year history, in view of the
fact that affiliation with The
Georgia Lions Lighthouse, Inc.,
depends upon per capita member
contribution, which have war
ranted financial aid for Newton
County cases from the Light
house, which is not su' ,sidized
by State or Federal appropria
tions.
However, this is but one of
Covington Lions’ community ser
vices. In addition, they have
built an attractive Wayside Park
on the new Highway No. 12;
placed garbage disposal recep
tacles at vantage points through
out the business district; and
cooperated in various community
sponsored projects.
A number of local merchants
are cooperating with the Lions
Auction, by donating merchan
dise to be sold at the “Going.
Going, Gone” prices; proceeds
of which will aid in the Eye
sight Preservation, and other
fine Lions Club sponsored civic
and waUare programs.
