BITS OF SOUTHERN
SUNSHINE
MAMIE OZBURN ODUM
A WINTER NIGHT
AT HOME
A stretch of hill that leads to
the creek.
All clothed in ermine white,
Farm homes are blots of black
ness -
The windows gems of light
The snow-clouds race and gam
bol
With flurries over its face,
And every tree and tiny shrub
Is dressed in crystal lace.
The hearth-flame climbs the
Chimney’s throat.
With fire glow rich and red,
The old oil-lamps send out a
gleam
Os muted shadows overhead.
And father reads his cherished
book,
And mother . . . calm and
sweet
Sit and knit on soft red wool
For comfort of little feet.
Outside the ice-winds clatter
Like demons in the gloam,
But warmth and comfort find
release
On a winter night at home.
