MRS. SWANN'S
FIRST GRADE
We have two Fire Marshals.
They are Becky Blair and Don
Floyd. When we have fire drills,
Becky leads us out side and Don
remains to march out last to
see that no child is left in the
room. Don’s father is Fire Chief
for the city. Last week Mr. Floyd
invited us up to the Fire De
partment to see the big new fire
truck. It was very interesting to
learn about the truck. He told
u. how the firemen use the big
truck to fight city fires and how
water may be pumped from an
open ereek or larger streams. On
returning to school, we wrote a
story about our trip and made
pictures of the fire truck.
On Valentine Day, some of our
mothers gave us a lovely party.
While we were having our re
cess period, the mothers decor
ated the tables. Our room was
bright and colorful with Valen
tines and pretty spring flowers.
Dorothy Hardman brought some
lovely red Camellia blossoms for
the party. Mrs. Exley made a
beautiful Valentine box, which
held all our Valentines After
singing four new songs, a game
“Musical Bean Bag” was played.
Judy Forrester won the prize
and was given a box of candy.
Punch and heart shaped cook
ies were served and then the
Valentines were given out. We
thank Mrs. Exley, Mrs. Callaway,
Mrs. Hardman, Mrs. Hegwood,
Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Kent for
this lovely party.
We regret that Rufus Yar
brough remains sick. Also, Fran
ces Thomas. We miss them and
hope they will soon be back to
school.
Twenty-four of us have com
pleted “Day In and Day Out”
and have had our Achievement
tests. We have started reading
“The Wishing Wells.” One group
is reading “Under the Sky.” We
are enjoying reading in our new
(library books, also February 18

On Thursday. February 14 we
will have a Valentine party. W T e
want to thank the following
mothers for the lovely party:
Mrs. Ed Robinson, Mrs. Roland
McDaniel, Mrs. Zig Callaway,
Mrs Fred Harwell, Mrs. Hill
| Massey, Mrs. Frank Cartledge,
■ Mrs. Claud Cartledge and Mrs.
R. L. Autry. We think a Valen

Smitty Callaway had fun this
oast weekend riding his pony
“Sky Bird.”
| Elaine Wood spent the week
' end with her grandmother in
Macon.
Sara Jean Fisher of Macon
spent the weekend with Anne
Baxter Pratt and they had fun
making Kodak pictures of their
pets and of themselves.
We read stories about Abra
ham Lincoln on his birthday. We
। also drew pictures of his log
house and wrote stories about
him. Here is one of the stories
we wrote.
“When Abraham Lincoln was
a little boy, there were no
school houses. His mother taught
i him to read. She would tell
! him stories too. The story he

■ liked best was about George
Washington.”
We are really working on our
“Health and Cleanliness Cam
paign.” We have found that we
have a very truthful group. If
someone forgets to brush teeth
etc. they always confess! We
j are proud of our record, for we
feel that we have improved in
many ways.
Diane Massey will be seven
years old on February 18, and
Richard Allen will be seven on
February 21. He almost was born
on George Washington’s birthday.

third grade
We are all looking forward to
our Valentine Party. Our moth
ers give us such nice parties
and we do appreciate it and en
joy them.
We made folders to hold our
Valentines and know they will
will be filled.
Georgia Day is February 12
and we made very attractive
folders. We have a set of Geor
gia books that are just beauti
ful and you really know about
Georgia after reading them. So
many of the boys and girls had
visited historical and the natural
scenes in Georgia.
Have two groups in “If I
Were Going,” and we are in
(England. We’ve seen London
fogs here in Georgia for several
mornings. It’s fun to take an
j imaginary trip across the ocean.
We see on our grand globe
where we are and trace our
course from New York. We are
studying multiplication and di
vision in Arithmetic, check and
write terms. After all multipli
cation is a short addition and in
subtraction and division we
have less.
We had a few sunny days to
play out at recess. So nice to
get out in the fresh air and run,
play games and baseball.
Mrs. Christian is so nice to us.
She is wonderful and has good
food. Extra nice to some who
don’t eat Weiners or pork. Al
ways have plenty and the food
is so well prepared. Will be
wonderful to eat in our new
lunchroom. Everything is so
pretty and modern. Better come
; over to see us.
| Hope you receive lots and lots
of Valentines.

We get so busy in our room
Monday and time for NEWS get
by before we realize it
We have been planning and
looking forward to getting into
, our new building, but seems we
will have to dream a few weeks
! longer.
; Valentine Day is Thursday and
las always we look forward to
a social hour provided by a
: group of mothers who are the
following: Mrs. Hardman, Mrs.
Hay, Mrs. Piper, Mrs. Tribble,
Mrs. Waldrop, Mrs. Hunt, Mrs.
। Kitchens and Mrs Fambrough.
Some of these mothers work so
they will not get to be with us.
We are going to miss having
them enjoy the occasion with us
We are enjoying studying a
bout some of the cities that
halped our country to grow. In
arithmetic we have started mul
tiplying by two figures. We hope
we will get our work correct.
Some were a little confused at
first.
Our Science has given us
many interesting facts about
nature. It is interesting to read
and study about animats in the
past that are now extinct.
Our weekly reader gives us
much c rrent r?ws information
which we to discuss to
gether n < ..
Our Singing Wheels Reader
gives us a good picture of the
early settlers. We can see how
differently our life is today
with so many wonderful con
veniences.
