PORTERDALE — The mem
ory of Bishop Valentine was
very much alive in the Porter
dale Jr. High School when par
ties and programs were enjoy
ied on Valentine's Day, February
14- ’ ,
Miss Betty Ann Maddox and
Miss Judy Barker presented a
program in Miss Pauline Hard
man’s Seventh Grade room that
morning. They told of the origin
of the day in both prose and
poetry.
Parties were held in the fol
lowing rooms: (reporters have
written of them as follows):
Miss Ruby Lane’s First Grade
boys and girls enjoyed their first
Valentine Party at school on
Thursday, February 14. Grade
mothers who were in charge
were: Mrs. J. T. Mills, Mrs.
J. T. Moore, Mrs. C. T.
Head Mrs. B. F. Campbell,
Alvin Marlow. Mrs. Mills, Mrs.
Alvin Marlow. Mrs. Mill, Mrs.
Moore, and Mrs. Head brought
the refreshments. There were ice
cream, cookies, and Valentine
candy. Each hild had an individ
ual mailbox with his or her name
on it.
Charles Bohanan told a story,
“Brother Rabbit and the Goo
bers”.
Parents of Mrs. Bessie Bruce's
Second Grade children helped
them to have a happy Valentine*
Day celebration with a party in
their room. Present for the occa
sion were: Mr. and Mrs. Homer
Huckaby, Mrs. Clarence Capell,
and Mrs. Ellison Wilkerson. Other
mothers who shared in the suc
cess of the occasion included:
Mrs. Bonnell Wells. Mrs. Norman
Bennett and Mrs. Aubrey Evans.
Valentine caps, balloons, coca
colas, chocolate cakes, and' can
dies provided interesting favors
and food.

I artists in gay designs were filled
with the many, colored valen
i tines.
Miss Thompson’s Second Grade
enjoyed their Valentine Party on
Thursday, February 14. in the
I classroom. They all looked at
the colorful Valentines which
all received from friends. Nearly
all children learned how to spell
their classmates names.
Mrs, Hayden and Mrs. Walden
were the two grademothers who
came to the party, even though
the other seven who helpd were
unable to be present for the fun.
Refreshments of ice cream,
cookies, and candy hearts were
served
On Friday for. their language
lesson, boys and girls wrote
“thank you” leters to each of
the grademothers. Each one re
ceived about four letters.
During the Spring-like days,
this class has enjoyed beautiful
flowers in the room. They have
been welcoming Nettie Stanley
who came to the school from
Gaston, Alabama.
“Our room had a Valentine
Post Office. We mailed valentines
in the little post office and then
our postman, Randy Digby and
Randy Payne delivered them to
the little red mailboxes that each
pupil had made. On each box
was a white heart for a flag,
which had “I Love You” and
“Be My Valentine” written on it.
“Our room enjoyed games our
grademothers planned for us.

little cakes with hearts on them.
“The mothers gave clay and
. records for us to enjoy every
day.”

boxes for their Valentine Party
on February 14. Many mothers
“Put their heads together” to
plan a wonderful treat of coca
colas, pretzels, and candy for
the children. They were: Mrs.
Thelma Hayden, Mrs. Dixie
Brock, Mrs. Imogene Martin,
Mrs. Sara Wilson, Mrs. Jeannette
Aaron, and Mrs. Fannie Fields.
On Valentine's Day, Miss
Acree’s Fourth Grade had a play
entitled “Lincoln Meets Johnny
Appleseed.” Those who were in
it were: Matilda Johnston, —

Brickstore

Brickstore Improvement Club
is happy to welcome its newest
members. Dr. apd Mrs. H. E. Col
lier, who have recently bought a
farm in our community. Dr. Col
lier spent last weekend in Darien,
Ga., at a family birthday celebra
tion for his father, H. J. Collier.
Mr. Collier returned to Coving
ton with Doc and will remain a
few days.
Dr. H. E. Collier left Wednes
day to attend a Parker Seminar
at Winston-Salem, N. C. He will
return Sunday night.
The Porter MacMahons are ac
customed to many visitors at
their farm. Cherry Valley, but
last Wednesday was the first
time they’ve had a horse to come
a-visiting with its owners. Herb
and Alice Alford of Jackson High
way came and brought their beau
tiful mare, Chachus. While Alice
and Betty sat and visited, the
two country gentlemen spent a
most enjoyable afternoon riding
Chachus and Porter’s horse,
Lightning. Incidentally, did any
one notice a prominent real
estate man limping around town
on Thursday?)
Mr. and Mrs. Horace Davenport
of Atlanta visited their parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Connor over
the weekend. Other Sunday
guests of the Connors were Mr.
and Mrs. Ernest Mann and daugh
ter Ernestine of Starrsville and
Mr. and Mrs. Troy Knight and
grandchildren, Elaine and Lynn
from Cornish Mountain.

Council Meeting

The 4-H County Council had
a meeting recently and discussed
many problems of interest and
made plans for the coming
i months. Clubs represented at the
'meeting were as follows: Cov
i ington Junior High, 12; Mans
' field, 4: Brickstore, 5; Palmer
stone, 10; Cloverleaf, 12; and
'Newton High, 8.
We started the meeting by
giving the 4-H pledge. Then
John Knight, our president, got
the business underway. The first
thing discussed was National 4-H
Week, March 2-9. Plans are un
derway for Church Programs on
4-H Sunday and an exhibit in
one of the store windows.
A new 4-H Club was recog
nized., Cloverleaf Club, which
has 36 charter members.
Plans are being made for 4-H
summer camp in early July.
Mr. McKinney, County Agent,
told of Dairy Day Saturday,
April 27th. This will be a judging
show for boys over 14. There will
be only dairy cows„ not beef
stock. He urged 4-H’ers to com
plete record books. These must
be turned in the Agents’ office
by July 4th. Outlines# will be
