; Does Oldest Youngster
Always Get The Blame?
ly GARRY CLEVELAND MYERS, Ph.D.
OFTEN, the youngest child in;
a family is the aggressor. This,
may be true even after they are
grown.
It begins this way:
When wrongdoing involves
both youngsters, the parents may
assume that the older, because he
Is older, should be held respon
sible. And when there are quar
rels between the two, the parents
incline to take it for granted that
the older is the aggressor and
come to the defense of the
younger as the underdog. It is
easy for the younger child to be
gin to take advantage of and im
pose on the older one.
Squeals on Brother
When the tots are in another
room and get into a quarrel, the
younger one may run to the par
ents to squeal on the older. Far
too often, the parents will punish
the older child or at least give
more weight to the younger
child’s report.
Suppose you have two children
under seven or eight When they
commit some misdemeanor to
gether, do you generally assume
that the older one was respon
sible? Are you inclined to rebuke
or punish him?
Hold a Tried
And is it usually the younger
one who runs from another room
charging the older with aggres
sion? When you hear them quar
reling, do you hold a trial? Do
you then give more weight to
what the younger says? Do you

। punish either one on the other’s
i I testimony?
■ It is better not to have a trial
at all or punish either on the
other’s report. If you do anything,
. separate them for a definite pe-»
riod without trying to place the
blame on either.
Observe these children closely
for the next several days in ordi
; nary situations to ascertain
. which, if either, is usually the
aggressor.
Occasionally, you may find that
the older lords it over the
younger and snatches his things
from him. In that case, you will
have to curb the older child. Per
haps he is over-bossed by a play
mate or parent and takes it out
on his younger brother or sister.
Or he may not have playmates
. his own age, which condition
would be correctable.
Must Be Curbed
More often than not, you will
find the younger child is the ag
; gressor and will need to be
curbed. Indeed, the younger one
may be doing many things to
cause the eldest to attack him so
he can squeal and get the older
' punished.
Where there are two tots in
the family, a big problem may be
■ to protect the eldest from the
i barbarism of the baby.
