News of Baptist
Training Union
Our Baptist Training Union
is growing rapidly, biit there
are many boys and girls who
need the wonderful fellowship
we are enjoying who are not
coming. There are many of the
17 to 25 age group not present
on Sunday Nights, and there are
many adults who are not back
ing their church up by being
present in the adult Union. We
need every one of you. This is
YOUR CHURCH. God expects
each one of us to do our part
in Kingdom work, so let’s not
find ourselves absent next Sun
day night when the roll is call
ed.
On last Sunday night the lead
ers entertained the Intermediate
Group at a delightful social at
the church, after the Church
Service. Delicious sandwiches,
cokes and foods were served.
Many times we rush to B.T.U.
without our supper, and there
fore this food is enjoyed while
we become better acquainted
with our fellow members.
For the last three Sunday
Nights the Young People from
17 to 26 have been entertained
in homes. Betty Anne Masten
and her Mother entertained and
the members enjoyed cooking
hamburgers, and a feast of other
goodies were enjoyed. The next
Sunday night there were 26 at
the home of Mrs. Dennis, where
we eooked hot dogs and had
all kinds of cakes and pickles
and other things. After we ate
we played the organ and sang
songs.
Last Sunday night there were
about 20 present at Mrs. Den
nises for a Hamburger supper
with all the trimmings and vari
ous kinds of cake and potato
chips. We always stay until a
bout 10 o’clock. The best part of
all is the wonderful programs
in each department where each
group puts on their own pro
gram. We are doing our daily
Bible Readings and then one
person gives a quit on the Daily
Bible Readings for the week
which is helpful.
All of our work for the young
people is centered around the
8.Y.F.1. (Baptist Youth Fellow
ship and Inspiration. Marshal
Edwards is President of the
Stone Mountain Association B
Y.F.I. and it meets every third
Monday evening. The Better
Speakers Tournament will be
held at Lithonia on March J4th.
The winner wiM be given a trip
to Ridgecrest during the week
of July 4-10th. Martell Ed
wards will tell each member
how they can try to win this.
We want many of our group to
go to H dgecrest, but wouldn’t
it be wonderful if you could
win this trip?
We are going to have a won
derful four day Study Course at
the First Baptist Church in Cov
ington on Monday March 11,
Tuesday 12th, go to prayer meet
ing in a body on Wednesday
night and then complete the
course on Thursday night the
14th and Friday the 15th. So
please everybody be there!
The Adult Union’s Book is
“Shadow over America” and
will be tought by our pastor
Rev. Edgar Callaway. The Young
Peoples Book is “Alcohol and
Christian Influence” and will be
taught by Rucker Ginn. The In
termediate book is “It’s up to
You.” and will be taught by
Mrs. W. E. Smith. The Junior’s
Book is “Highway to Heaven”
and will be taught by Carolyn
Campbell. Don’t you miss this
or it will be your loss now and
in future life!
Youth Week is April 7th to
13th and we must observe this.
Miss Ellington has promised to
send us some help on this and
we hope she does. She is an in
spiration to all in her work.
She says: “As a kick-off to
Youth Week we are observing
Youth Night at Lithonia on
Monday Evening, April 8. A
mong special guests that night
we shall have Messrs Julian
Snyder, Lawrence Hardy, Aubrey
Hawkins, Hugh King, Dr. Carey
Vinzant, and several other out
standing State workers, plus
special music by some Tift
Girls.” We will get further in
formation about this later and
hope many of us can attend.
Make your plans now! Plans
are under way for our Youth
Revival to be held in August.
It was held in Conyers last year.
Rev. Charles Rice and John
Trueblood, Baylor Students will
again conduct the revival, but
time and dates will be given
later.
We hope to have Miss Elling
ton visit our Training Union
sometime this Spring, and bring
us much information and inspir
ation.
Won’t you, every one be in
your place Sunday night when
the roll is called at Training
Union? The young people’s
group will be entertained, after
Church at the home of Miss
Elaine Hombuckle. The Young
people have built their group
up from just a few to twelve for
two Sunday nights, and even
though we had one new one
last Sunday Night, one of our
Group Captains teaching over at
another church had to be ab
sent and we were very proud
of him, that other churches were
calling on him. but three in all
were absent, leaving only 10
present with a new one who
had not been before. Let’s never
get under 12 again! We can
build our Young People’s Group.
If you HAVE to go to Atlanta
BE back by six o’clock. We
need you!
Holsenbeck
Funeral Held
In Winder
Friends and relatives in Cov
ington were deeply grieved to
learn of the passing of Mr. W.
M. Holsenbeck, of Winder.
His beloved wife passed away
in September, and he is survived
by two fine sons, Dr. George
Holsenbeck. of Atlanta, and Mr.
Arnold Holsenbeck, of Mem
phis, Tennessee. Mrs. W. K.
Swann and Mr. Claude Upshaw
are cousins of the Holsenbecks.
Mr. Holsenbeck was a Christ
ian gentlemen, known and
loved by all in this Piedmont
section of the State. He was ac
tive in the Methodist Church,
where funeral services were
held last Wednesday afternoon.
The many floral offerings de
picted the love and high esteem
in which he was held.
He was a part of his com
munity and State. He was in
terested and active in every re
ligeous, civic and patriotic move
ment. He gave of his time and
means, his talent and his lov
ing interest in making his town
and state a better place in which
to live. He was a devoted hus
band and father, a cherished
neighbor and friend to all man
kind. He walked, as nearly as
he could, in the path in which
his Heavenly Father wished
him to walk. We know these
two wonderful persons will live
on in their fine sons.
The heartfelt sympathy of
his friends is extended to the
entire family. Dr. George Hol
senbeck was a classmate of Dr
Jordan Callaway, of this city.
Among Covington friends and
relatives attending the funeral,
in Winder, were Mrs. W. K.
Swann, Mrs. Walker Combs,
Mrs. C. C. King, Sr., and Mrs.
Belmont Dennis.
