St. Patrick's Day Theme Marks
Program of Porterdole Club, Nite Div.
PORTERDALE — “My Wild
Irish Rose” led by Mrs. Milford
Johnson accompanied by Miss
Jordye Tanner opened the
meeting of the Porterdale Wo
man’s Club, Night Division, on
Monday, March 16, at seven
thirty o’clock in the Porter
Gymnasium. Mrs. J. T. Elkins,
President, welcomed each mem
ber and guest.
Mrs. Claud Cason and Mrs.
Bernard Strawn presented a
most enjoyable program having
as its theme St. Patrick’s Day.
Miss Sandra Harwell of Mans
field, Georgia was introduced
as a Future Homemaker of
America enrolled at Newton
County High School, who gave
a splendid devotional message
entitled “Count Your Dreams”.
Mrs. Sam Heslip, a native of
Ireland, rendered two lovely
vocal solos. She was accompan
ied by Miss Jordye Tanner. Miss
Anita Millwood, another stu
dent at Newton County High
School, presented her original
skit with an Irish theme.
Charles Bohanan, attired in an
Irish costume, was accompanied
by Mrs. Milford Johnson as he
gave two tap dance numbers.
To conclude the program, Mrs.
M. E. Klimaszewski accompani
ed her daughters, Kathy and
Ann, who did an Irish Jig.
Minutes and correspondence
were read by Mrs. Inez Bucka
lew, secretary. Mrs. C. B. Maloy,
Assistant Treasurer, presented
the report of the treasury.
The hostess reported an at
tendance of sixty-four members
and ten visitors at the meeting.
Mrs. Thennie Parker was recip
ient of the attendance award.
Mrs. E. L. Digby urged each
lady to sign if or not she would
make the Washington trip by
the April meeting. She then
called for reports from the var
ious chairmen. Mrs. John Carter
told of plans to complete the
cookbooks within the week and
to distribute them for sale im
mediately. Mrs. Pauline John
son told of the Variety Show
to be held in the Porterdale
School auditorium on either the
first or second Friday in April.
After naming her committees
to arrange this event, she called
a meeting at the school for
Thursday night, March 26, to
complete final plans. Mrs. Claud
Cason gave an itemized report
of the work of her project
group. That this group had pro
fited $266.95 for the Trip Fund
won the applause of everyone.
Mrs. Jaynes spoke emphatically
of the needs to put the Calen
dar Project over in a big way
if the trip fund treasury would
be satisfactory for the trip
planned. Members had been
asked to bring the calendars to
' this meeting, but Mrs. Jaynes
: extended the period to April 1.
This latter date would be
FINAL. Two prizes will be a
i warded for most names and
| calendars sold by any individual
in each group of the club. i.e.
Morning Division and Night
; Division.
Old and New business were
discussed. Mrs. Elkins reported
the purchase of a new Hotpoint
frigerdaire for the gymnasium
kitchen, a contribution of
$300.00 to the Inter-Com sys
tem for the Porterdale Junior
High School, and an investment
of $588.85 in Newton Federal
Savings and Loan Corporation
by the club. These proceedings
completed the disposition of the
War Bonds of the club for which
recommendations were given at
the February meeting.
A letter from Mr. C. D. Ram -
sey had been received by the
President relative to the Wo
man’s Club attending Salem
Camp Meeting in August on a
particular night and furnishing
special music. The club voted
to attend the meeting on August
14, but Mrs. Elkins was in
structed to ask Mr. Ramsey to
arrange the music as the Wo
man’s Club did not. wish to be
responsible. Miss Martha Ram
sey announced that a water
melon cutting would follow the
service that night in August.
Committees were named for
the next month as follows:
PROGRAM: Miss Jordye Tan
ner, Mrs. Henry Whitfield.
DECORATIONS: Miss Eliza
beth Willis, Miss Ruby Lane.
REFRESHMENTS: Miss Ruth
Tanner, Mrs. James Adams,
Mrs. John Carter, Mrs. Allie C.
Burch, Mrs. B. C. Crowell, Mrs.
Julius Johnson.
Delicious refreshments of
ritz with bacon and almond dip,
olives, carrot sticks, doughnuts,
and hot coffee were enjoyed
during the social period.
Always hang “wash and
wear” cottons on nonrusting
hangers, Mis Avola Whitesell,
clothing specialist, Agricultur
al Extension Service, advises.
Collars, cuffs, and seams should
be smoothed out and straighten
'ed, too, she adds.
