Salem

Cold weather hasn’t dampen
ed the Christmas spirit that has
invaded Salem Community and
people are scurrying around
and are trying to get their shop
ping done early. Fruit cake
baking is in full swing around
here and the first thing we
know Christmas will be here.
The sick list here is rather
long this week, for we find that
Mrs. Slade Ellington has been
quite sick, but she is improved
at this writing as is Mrs. Vallie
Chambers who was able to at
tend church Sunday. Mrs. Jes
sie Piper is improving to the
delight of her neighbors and
friends. Miss Leitha Cowan is
on the sick list and Miss Chris
tine Loyd is at Newton County
Hospital where she underwent
surgery Monday. Mr. and Mrs.
Beeman Smith are both on the
sick list. Mr. Smith being a pa
tient at Emory Hospital. George
Ramsey had an accident Sun
day morning that sent him to
Newton Hospital for X-Rays, at
the latest report he was home
but still not able to walk. J.
W. Loyd of Covington has a
host of Salem friends who are
sending him good wishes for
his speedy recovery at the same
time we wish our other sick
and shut-in friends a speedy re
covery.
Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Autry have
returned from their honeymoon
and were down from Atlanta
over the weekend visiting their
oarents Mr. and Mrs. Grier
Holifield.
Salem oeople who attended
the first Christmas party of the
season were Mrs. Douglas Yan
cev, Mrs. J. F. Burns. Mrs. C.
W. Berry and Mrs. Bankston
Ellington when they joined
other Home Demonstration Club
members from over Newton
County to hold their 1959 Coun
cil oarty at the Lesion Hall in
Covington Friday. December 4.
Salem Home Demonstration
Club members are reminded
that their Christmas party will
be held this Thursday. Decem
ber 10. at 2:30 p.m. All mem
bers are urged to be on hand,
and invited guests will be wel
come.

regular appointment here Sun
day. His message was well
given on “Christmas.” He and
his family left for Augusta,
where he was to preach in his
father's church Sunday even
ing.
The school building here is
being converted into a com
munity house. The people in
charge of the project would ap
preciate donations of games and
equipment.

ited Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wag
ner and Lt. and Mrs. Jim Fos
ter of Plattsburg. New York,
who are visiting the Wagners,
Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Hugh Sams and children
visited Mr. and Mrs. Alfred
Grant, Saturday.
Mrs. George returned home
with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Greer
of Atlanta. Wednesday for a
few days visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Whitehead
of Carlton spent the weekend
with Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Adams.
They attended church services
here Sunday and Mrs. White
head rendered a lovely solo.

We are sorry to report that
Bob Sams is on the sick list
this week and we wish for him
a speedy recovery. Mrs. Ada
Chanman continues ill. We ao
preciate the cards and visits.
She is the mother of this re
porter.
Mrs. J. T. Pitts is visiting her
sister, Mrs. W. B. R. Penning
ton in Covington for a few days.
She alsb spent Thanksgiving
with her son and family, Mr.
and Mrs. Gay Pitts and family
of Indian Springs.
The WSCS and Ladies Bible
Class will have a joint Christ
mas party at the church at 3
o’clock on December 16. Each
lady will bring a gift not to
exceed 50 cents.
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Sams,
Wayne and Ellen spent last
weekend with their parents.
Mr. and Mrs. McKinney of Ball
Ground.
Thanksgiving with their par

of Porterdale visited Mr. and
Mrs. Beeman Smith on Friday
night.

Mrs. J. W. Thompson and
Mrs. Harold Thomoson spent
last Thursday in Atlanta.
Mrs. Gilbert Stallsworth went
to Emory Hospital Monday for
an overnight stay for observa
tion.

St. Joseph Hospital Sunday to
visit Mrs. S. O. Lindsey of For
est. Park, who is a patien at St.
Joseph.
Miss Wanda Bailey was home
for Thanksgiving Holidays from
Middle Georgia College.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Savage
went to Macon Sunday to visit
the Pete Mason family.

turned from Macon after snend
ing a few weeks with Mr. and
Mrs. Clomer Crowell and fam
ily.
