'•HAVE YOU EVER
LOVED A DOG?”
Have you ever had a little dog
that you really loved? If you have,
then you will enjoy reading this.
If you have never loved a dog,
then I suggest that you read
something else.
"Tootsie” was 13 years old last
Christmas. She never spent
a single night away from either
our house or my mothers and
dads home. She has traveled
with my little companion and me
thousands of miles. We traveled
13 times from Massachusetts to
Georgia together. She has stayed
in the best hotels and motels in
three different countries. She
lived in two countries. She has
traveled by plane across a part of
the Atlantic Ocean, but her travel-

Last October, I returned from a
speaking engagement, and when
she greeted me I discovered a
tiny growth on her side. The doc
tor said she was too old for an
operation, so I brought her back
home. We watched the tumor
grow and knew that life for her
was short. She never complained,
but we decided that she might be
suffering and so I took her for
her last ride, and now she has
entered that place of endless happi
ness where all good dogs go. It
took almost more courage than I
could muster to take her on that
last ride, but at least I know she
is not suffering.
Somehow I feel that little
“Tootsie” had some qualities we
should have. She was obedient
Once she understood a command,
she carried it out to perfection.
I know some children who need
to learn this Wesson.
You could depend on her. For 13
years she was ready to greet me
when I came home at night. She
| always did the work we asked her
,to do. In Alabama, she kept the
chickens out of the garden. In
। Massachusettes, she kept the birds
|I om pecking the tomatoes. In
j Cuba, she kept the lizards out of
। the house.
Finally. "Tootsie” loved her
master and every member of the
I family. Her love was not depend
।ed on how she felt. You could
| scold her, yet this did not change
j her love. She loved us uncondi
tionally.
Now. I hope I can translate
' some of her qualities into my own
j life. I believe if I can be as
I obedient, faithful and loving to
God as she was to me, I will hear
the Father say, “Well done, thou
| good and faithful servant...enter
। hou into the joy of thy Lord.”
| (Matthew 25:21).
