Talmadge Again
Hits At Benson
Farm Program
u. S Sen. Herman E. Tal
madge’s comment on President
Eisenhower’s message to the
bobtail session of Congress is
interesting and timely, especi
ally because of what he said
about the farm program. Thia
is what he had to say:
“The general premise of the
President’s message — securi
ty with solvency—is one with
which the overwhelming ma
jority of Americans will agree.
“His recommendations for an
expanded military effort with
emphasis upon greater capa
bilities for the Strategic Air
Command, modernization of
the Army and acceleration of
missile and Polaris submarine
development are most gratify
ing. His insistence upon main
tenance of fiscal responsibili
ty is to be applauded.
“His continued endorsement
of the discredited Benson farm
policies is discouraging, but a
degree of encouragement is to
be derived from his admission
that perhaps a ‘different ap
proach’ toward the solution of
farm problems may be need
ed. His proposal for enactment
of additional, divisive force
legislation in the field of civil
rights is a deplorable surrend
. er to election-year politics.
“I shall give my wholeheart
ed support to all measures
- needed for an adequate defense
> but shall oppose with all the
' vigor of my being any and all
proposals for subjecting the
’ American people to the ca
prices of federal officials and
agencies in the exercise of their
constitutional rights as free
men and women.
“I am not optimistic about
the passage of a realistic and
effective farm program this
year, but I shall lend my every
effort toward seeking at every
opportunity the enactment of
one along the lines of the bill
I already have proposed.
“It is my hope that this re
cess session of Congress will
apply itself sincerely and dil
igently to its pending business
and leave political issues to the
candidates and the voters.”
Gilts should be eight months
