were used in the decorations.
The dining table, from which
the dinner was served in buf
fet style, was overlaid with a
white damask cloth and had as
its central decoration an ar
rangement of yellow marigolds,
brown eyed daisies and yellow
asters in an antique pressed
glass punch bowl, balanced by
five branched silver candela
bra holding white burning ta
pers. An antique silver epergne
held lighted white tapers and
a large cluster of grapes and
green leaves was placed on the
buffet.
The banquet table in t h e
library was overlaid with a
lace cloth and held an ame
thyst brown glass container of
white roses and pink geraniums
flanked by ivy entwined crys
tal candelabra with white ta
pers. Small tables covered with
white embroidered, lace trim
med cloths were arranged in
the living room and held an
ivy entwined crystal candle
stick with white taper.
On arrival the guests were
served fruit juice, olives and
crackers by Miss Annibel Rob
inson, vice - president of the
DAR and Miss Florence Bower.
Mrs. Hall invited the guests in
to the dining hall where Ho
ward Brooks gave the invoca
tion.
At the conclusion of the din
ner the group assembled in the
living room where Mrs. Hall
thanked them warmly for their
fine cooperation and that of
the parents in faithfully giving

their best to the CAR. Miss
Sara Margaret Patterson, new
CAR president, who recently
graduated with honors from
Brenau Academy, Gainesville,
was presented. She graciously
thanked the hostess and parents
for their interest in the CAR.
Members who will enter col
lege this fall were presented.
They are: Mary Jane Dixon,
past president, who will enter
Middle Georgia; Brenda Brooks,
Agnes Scott; Camilla Dietz,
Vanderbilt; Stephanie Ginn,
Emory at Oxford; Sara Mar
garet Patterson, Emory at Ox
ford. Two college visitors Ellen
Weaver, of University of Geor
gia and Irene Robinson, Bre
nau, were presented.
Mrs. R. H. Patterson was
presented and she gave a time
ly talk on the United States
Constitution, its values and
amendments and the m a n y
reasons for being a good citi
zen. September 17 - 23 will be
observed as Constitution Week.
Mrs. T. A. Rape accompanied
the group as they sang, “Ameri
ca.”
Howard Brooks spoke words
of apreciation to Mrs. Hall for
her work with the CAR and
expressed thanks for the train
ing given in this organization to
the young citizens of Coving
ton.
Members not graduating this

Savage son of Mr. and Mrs.
Dean Savage of Covington.
Miss Hicks is a graduate of
Newton County High School
and is attending Southeastern
Business College in Atlanta.
Mr. Savage is a graduate of
Newton County High School
and is employed by Kroger in
Covington.
The wedding date will be an

Circle Met Tues.
McCullough Home
The Maggie Hull Circle of
Zion Baptist Church met Tues
day, September 6 at the home
of Mrs. Nell McCullough with
13 members present and five
Sunbeams.
Mrs. Almand Hicks was wel
comed as a visitor. Mrs. Opal
Cowan opened the meeting
with prayer after which Mrs.
Jim Pennington, chairman, pre
sided during the business ses
sion with roll call and minutes
read of previous meeting.
During the past month our
Circle presented a Bible to the
shut-ins at the Wingate Home
in Covington. Program and de
votional was given by Mrs.
Jim Pennington taken from
Royal Service. Those taking
parts were Mrs. Lottie McCul
lough and Mrs. Dewey Mit
chell.
The closing prayer was led
by Mrs. W. S. Freeman. Dur- !
ing the social hour, the hos- .
tess served a delicious sweet I
course with cold drinks.

Os Covington Garden Club Meeting
The September meeting of
the Covington Garden Club
was held on Wednesday, Sep
tember 7, at the home of Mrs
N. S. Turner. Mrs. L. W. Mas
ten, president, called the meet
ing to order. For the opening
meditation the club collect was
read unison. A new member,
Mrs. A. D. Jordan, was wel
comed into the club. Mrs. F. S.
Burney, mother of Mrs. Turn
er, was welcomed as a visi
tor.
Following the reports of the
secretary and treasurer, a re
port was given from the Pro
ject Committee Chairman, Mrs.
F. C. Nesbit. Members appoint
ed to serve on the Garden
Council are Mrs. C. G. Hen
derson, Mrs. C. D. Ramsey Jr.
and Mrs. Aubra Sherwood.
It was decided by the club
to have a flower workshop
during the year in place of a
flower show. The club will
again work with other clubs
in having flower arrangements
at the Newton County Fair
Members of the club will as
sist later in the surplus food
program planned for Newton
County. Mrs. Lewis Caldwell
distributed leaflets for the
Year Book.
