HOW TO RECAPTURE YOUR FAITH
Many people have written me 1
this question: "Brother Roberts,
why is there so much trouble
and confusion in the world
today?”
My answer is the same to all.
In my opinion there is much
confusion and trouble in our
civilization today because mil
lions of people have lost their
faith. They have stopped believ
ing in a higher power. Urey
have ceased to have contact
with God. They are not near
the living presence of Jesus
Christ of Nazareth.
I have discovered that there
are two kinds of people who
Jose their faith. The first group
is made up of people wire have
closed their minds to the proof
of God's existence. They shut
their eyes to the living evidence
on every side—the stars, moon, 1
sun. They do not see nature in '
its beauty and profusion. They
refuse to realize the many provi- I
dences of God which come to ’
us every day of our lives. ’
The other group is made up *
of people who are honest in 5
their doubts. They have not ।
.found the proofs their minds *
require for them to believe '
firmly in Christ, and in their '
honesty they are going about (
seeking some evidence, some 5
tangible proof upon which they (
can hang their faith and believe
,in the existence of a true God f
Would it surprise you to t
know that Jesus is very kind 1
and patient with honest doubt- t
ertf He is concerned with men I

has been named Georgia Home
maker for the Fourth Congres
sional District.
Mrs. Scarbrough, who is bet
ter known to friends as Caro-
I faith because they cannot find
a tangible proof.
Many people miss the bless
ing of the presence of God be
cause they stay away from the
place of worship. Worship is
divine. Many, many people lose
their faith because they do hot
go where Christ manifests His
glory. They fail to associate
themselves with people who
know Christ and in whom
Christ personally dwells.
I do not mean to say that the
presence of God is found only
in a church. I believe that we
can feel the living presence of
Jems Christ anywhere, any
time, but often it is easier to
draw near to God in His holy
sanctuary. After all, ft is His
house and there we may ex
pect to find faith and the pres
ence of God.
Perhaps you have lost your
faith through some tragedy or
unpleasant experience but have
still retained your basic hon
esty. You want only to find
something upon which you can
hang your faith. I promise you
that God will come to you This
is the moment of revelation,
when Jesus draws the curtain
of mystery aside and lets you
see the tangible proof of
Christ’s reality.
If you want to recapture your
faith, simply look about you at
the evidence. See Jesus —hear
Him, feel Him, let the warm'
glowing feeling in your heart
tell you now that there is a
living God and He is good.
“TUNE YOUR LIFE TO THE
HEAVENLY CHANNEL’’
I met a man the other day
who is typical of an unnum
bered host of people who are
drifting across the stage of life.
He said to me. "I have not
found my place in life. I see no
meaning, and I find no worthy
purpose to my existence.’’ A
lot of people like my friend ap
pear to be like a giant ship at
sea. Without a cargo, a port of
entry, a compass, or a rudder
to guide them.
Space will not permit me to
tell you all I said to him.
Among other things, I told him
this: “Life can be good. It is
worth the price, no matter
Ivn, lives with her husband and
three active youngsters in a
picturesaue old home at 426
College Street which the family
has painstakingly refurnished

Her activities In the home and
in her church and community
have placed Mrs. Scarbrough in
competition for the state title
of Georgia Homemaker of the
vear to be awarded at t h e
Southeastern Fair on October 6.
The 1960 Georgia Homemak
er will be crowned by Mrs.
Lyndon B. (Lady Bird) John
son. wife of the Democratic
nominee for Vice President. The
winner also will receive a
week’s vacation for herself and
her family at Jekvll Island.
Nominated by the Carrollton
Junior Woman’s Club, Mrs.
Scarbrough has long been ac

She avoids excessive activ

in order to devote her primary
attention to her family. Her
husband. Dan. is an engineer
for Southern Bell Telephone
Company here. Her three child
ren are Dan, IS, Robyn, 12 and
Kristina. 9. All are outstand
ing students.
Mrs. Scarbrough believes
that you should “teach children
about life, give them a purpose,
and trust them?’ So each of her
children is taught responsibility
and self-reliance.
Twelve-year-old Robyn also
is taught a few of the family
secrets on baking, a talent Mrs.
Scarbrough says “runs in the
family”. Robyn has done most
of the family baking since she
was 16.
Although Mrs. Scarbrough
does not live on a farm, she be
lieves that her food freezer
saves as much as 50 per cent on
the grocery bill. It is stocked
the vear round with vegetables,
fruits, meats, pies, cakes, and
an amply supply of bread.
Jellies made from wild plums
and blackberries picked by the
family are a specialtv of Mrs.
Scarbrough, along with a va
riety of pickles.
Sewing is another talent pos
sessed by Mrs. Scarbrough.
She not only does all the dress
making for herself and her two
daughters, but makes curtains,
draperies, and other accessor
ies for the home which the
Scarbroughs have remodeled.
At present, she i« also studying
millinery.
This is the second home
which the Scarbroughs have re
modeled. And the job Included ।
a new foundation, new wiring. I

of enamel off the floors, literal

inch with repairs.
“Home decoration is a per
sonal challenge,” Mrs. Scar
brough says. “And I love every
minute of it.” I feel that the
happiness and well-being of my
family and friends Is important,
so I like to live in an air of
peace and harmony”.

LIFE CAN

what we are called upon to
pay. We are all created by God,
and we have a responsibility to
Him to build and fashion out
of our talents and opportun
ities a noble and worthwhile
life. Also, as a conscious being
with some sense of value and
worth of human personality,
we have an obligation to seif.
Finally, since our every action
pulls the heartstrings of those
who love us, we are in some
measure liable to them. That
■ is to say, I have no right to
। throw my life away; God has
a stake in my life; He endowed
me with dignity and divine
worth.”
; After our conversation, I
I came to this conclusion. Every
person who travels the path of
life, is under divine orders. We
do not always understand our
orders, but this does not mean
that God has no plan for our
lives. Some are like the man
who went to work with a knot
on his head about the size of
an egg. His companions ques
tioned him, and finally he said
in exasperation, “Well, my wife
and I had a little argument last
night. It was not a serious one;
she said, ‘shut up,’ and I thought
she said, ‘stand up.” Sometimes
we misunderstand God. Some
times we are too busy with our
own selfish interests to hear
Him when He speaks. Few are
sensitive to the clarion call of
God. The fact that so many are
filled with fear, confusion and
lack spiritual direction is not
God’s fault. It is our own.
I remember so vividly a fate
ful phone call I received one
afternoon from Havana, Cuba,
while attending a conference
some 500 miles down the is
land. One of my dear friends,
and a member of the church
where I served in Havana, died
while working at. his desk. I

of the night to fly to Havana.
The pilot invited me to the
cockpit. We were flying through
the darkness of the night when
something happened to our ra
dio equipment. The signal grew
weaker and weaker until our
radio would not pick it up. The
radio station was still sending
it out, but we could not re
ceive it. I have an idea that
this is what happens in life;
something is wrong with our
receiving equipment; we are
not always tuned into the Hea
venly Channel. God never stops
sending the signal.
When we feel that God is
far away, it does not mean
that He has changed. This is
evidence that something has
happened to us. As we parted, I
। told my friend, “Get yourself
j in tune with God’s will, and
life will glow with purpose and
j you will find your place.”
