Highway Deaths
In State About
Same As in '59
Georgia’s traffic death toil
at the end of the first eight
months of 1960 was running
neck-and-neck with a year ago.
But actually, this year’s over
all picture is a little brighter
than last year. Reason: Moto
rists traveled over 300-million
more miles on Georgia roads
this year.
This was disclosed in the
(Larwt Coverage Any Weekly In The State)
latest consolidated statistics
compiled by the State Depart
ment of Public Safety’s Acci
dent Reporting Division, just
released by Col. William P.
Trotter, director.
The comparative eight-mon
th totals were 669 fatalities this
year and 671 last year. This
represents a decrease of about
three-tenths of one per cent.
Rural deaths increased by
twelve, or two per cent,
i while urban deaths (those
occuring in cities and
more) decreased by 14, or nine
per cent.
However, Georgia’s death
rate, which is based on the
number of persons killed to
each 100-million miles travel
: ed, dropped from 6.1 to 5.9.
