Mrs. Rerr.v’s
Fourth Grade
Our group has been very,
very busy. We have just com
pleted our second six weeks
tests. They seemed harder, per
haps because we are really get
ting into Fourth Grade work.
We have the Chapel program
this week. Os course, we hS ve
a Thanksgiving program. We
have had some verv good pa
pers on “What We Are Thank
ful For.”
Many of our group are going
to grandmothers for the holi
days. We are all planning to
have happy holidays. We hope
that this lovely autumn weath
er stays at least one more week
end.
We started a bulletin board
composed of beautiful many
colored autumn leaves. Maybe
there were more autumn lea
ves to be seen in the moun
tains but they couldn’t have
been prettier than some that'
we had on our board.

last Friday night. There were
so many lovely prizes donated
by our friends. At this time we
’ I do not know how much money
’ was made but we hope it was
1 lots. The festival is sponsored
by our PTA. They do many
helpful things for our school.
The whole class wishes
everyone a safe and happy
' Thanksgiving.
Mrs. Meyer’s
Sixth Grade
Our sixth grade has been
hard at work on art work for
\ Thanksgiving. We made tur
keys. We cut them out of mime
ograph sheets. We pasted them
on colored construction paper.
We put colored egg shells on
: them piece by piece for the tail
feathers. They look realistic
from far off. We also made
place c rds for our Thanks
giving meal. We had four cards
for each person in our class.
By Jimmy Young
During the last six weeks’
; Mrs. Meyer’s Sixth Grade Class
1 made a chart of our school and
playground. In this chart we
put various things to watch. A
tree that was rotting and be
ginning to hollow out was one
of these.
In measuring the school we
had groups of pupils to ,0 out
and measure the building.
When they came in and told us
the length and width we scaled
it and charted it.
Instead of sending groups out
to measure the playground the
entire class went out. In this
chart we put in places to watch
for erosion.
By Jerry Garner
In our Science we are study
ing many different kinds of
rock. We have Igneous, Sedi
mentary metorphic rock. We
have an imprint of a leaf on a
rock that Bonnie Freeman
found on the playground. Mrs.
Meyer found a rock for our
collection. It was a pretty rock,
and she found a rock with li
chen on it.
By Polly Lingold
We had a Presidential Elec
tion on November Bth just like
the real election. Joyce White
and Jimmy Neely ran for the
Hawk Ticket. Eddie Hinton and
Frances Barnes ran for t h e
Ram ticket. On November Bth
we had two girls keep the polls,
their names were Linda Eng
lish and Peggy Wilson. We had
a box on the back table. Mrs.
Meyer ran off some ballots.
Each person went to the back
table and each ballot was num
bered so if anything happened
we could find the mistake. At
recess Linda English and Peggy
Wilson counted the votes. When
we came in it was announced
that Eddie Hinton and Frances
Barnes on the Ram Ticket
would be our president. We
know they will make a good
president and vice president.
By Sherry Hawkins.
Just last week we had our
6 weeks tests. The dates were
Nov. 14,15, 16 and 17. We were
glad to get them over with.
If everybody studied hard,
most everybody would make a
good grade. We had an Arith
metic. Social Studies, English.
Snelling. Science, Reading and
Health during the four days.
In Arithmetic we had a test
on adding fractions. If you
know how to work them,
they’re easy!
When you are in the sixth
grade, or maybe you’re already
in it, you will find that if you
study, fractions are easy.
By Steve Chapman
This last six weeks we have
taken up adding and subtract
ing fractions. We also made an
arithmetic homework chart. We
average our homework grades
as a class and we put it on our
chart. In this way we a r e
learning to average and chart
•at the 'ame time.
In Science we have been
studying rocks, mineral, mole
cules, atoms and elements. We
also have been studying how a
mountain is formed. Ray All
good made a model of a vol
cano out of plaster of Paris
and when he blows in a tube,
the cereal which represents la
va comes out of the volcano.
In art work we made turkeys
and place cards for Thanksgiv
ing.
By Peggy Fuller
We had a Fall Festival Fri
day night. We had Bingo, a
cake walk with delicious cakes,
fish pond, grab bag, country
store, and the wheel of for
tune. There were a lot of nice
prizes donated. We made over
S6OO.

New Law Affects
Social Security
Status Survivors
Social security benefits may
now be paid to survivors of
workers who died before Jan
uary 1, 1940, if the worker had
at least a year and a half of
social security work when he
died, says Joseph R. Murphy.
District Manager of the Social
Security Administration.
Before the social security
amendments of 1960, no month
ly benefits were payable to the
survivors of a worker who died
before 1940.
Under the new law,, if a
worker had social security cre
dit for at least a year and a
half, benefits may now be pay
able to his widow (and de
pendent mother) if age 62 or
older, to his dependent father
at age 65, and to his disabled
children if they became disabl
ed before they reached age 18.
This is true even if the family
had collected the "lump sum’’
at the time the family bread
। winner died.

garding this new provision, get

curity office at 275 Peachtree

Our twelfth week of school
: marked the beginning of Book
Week. We visit the library each
week, heck out books to read
and are trying to learn library
manners.
We were busy all week long
taking tests to see what we
needed to stress for the next
six weeks. We were proud of
Ronald Davis, J. A.. Herring,
Larry Carter who made 100 on
the 110 words we had for
twelve weeks.
Miss Marilyn Butler from the
State Department who spoke
at the P-TA visited our room
along with our mothers and
Miss Hays. They were thrilled
over our activities and things
we had made. Billy King had
painted a picture of a little
girl eating watermelon which
all of our visitors liked. We are
making Christmas pictures and
getting ready to paint scenes
on the basketball goal posts for
the Christmas tree program.

We are studying dividing
with eftrrving in arithmetic. It
was a little bit hard at first,
but it gets easier as we learn

We are studying about the

and Tony Wilkerson read us a
story about the Pilgrims and
the Indian, Squanto.
Johnny Dick fell out of a
tree and broke his arm. He
came back Tuesday. We were
all glad to have him back and
hope he gets his cast off soon.

We have finished all of our
six weeks tests.
In reading we have made
The Hastings Family Tree. We
enjoyed making it. And it helps
us to keep the family straight.
We are trying to keep our
room neater and the P a P^ r
picked up off the floor. We
have put our desks in a semi
circle, with the teacher s desk
in the middle.
In social studies we have fin
ished the unit about Thanks
giving. We know we have ■
lot to be thankful for.
We have made social studies
booklets. In these booklets we
keep our written work about a
certain unit. Then at the end of
that unit we have something to
study by.
