"Your Favorite

Urges Pine
Seedling
Planting
With economists predicting
an economic revolution between
now and the year 2000, and re
ferring specifically to the next
ten years as the “Golden 60’s”
because of the great new busi
ness opportunities this period
will offer the American people,
State Forester Ray Shirley ad
vised Georgia farmers and
landowners today to plant their
“lazy acres” and other unused
potential forest lands to pine
seedlings now. in order to gain
a fair share of this new wealth.
Shirley explained that far
mers of the state with unpro
ductive land could assure them
selves of increased personal in
come by planting trees since a
genera] economic “boom” in the
country will almost certainly
be accompanied by stronger ac
tivity in construction markets
and industrial uses of wood. He
pointed out, however, that for
est lands on farms in Georgia
now are producing about 50
percent of the wood they could
produce.
Emphasizing recent informa
tion releases by the Georgia
Forestry Commission, the State
Forester said, “Planned forest
management, of which tree
planting is a large part, is t h e
key to profitable farm forest
programs. Os all the pulpwood
produced in the United States

Do's And Don'ts
On Garden Mums ;
Garden chrysanthemums are '
rather hardy perennials. They
are planted in late spring and
early summer over most of the
country. Some gardeners, in the
south where May droughts are
common, may prefer to plant
in the fall.
There is no advantage in
early planting. Soil should be
warm. New plantings should
be kept watered until well es
tablished in their new location
but not soaking wet. They like
proper drainage.
Mums are very healthy plants
and do well with a minimum
of care in any type of garden
soil. For exhibition blooms,
they respond to plant food and
watering for steady growth, es
pecially when buds begin to
form in August. Mulching is
preferable to cultivating, not
only to preserve moisture but
to keep down weed growth
around their shallow roots.
New plants, from rooted cut
tings or new shoots in spring,
give superior plants and flowers
to old root clumps The excep
tion may be in the extreme
north, as in Montana and Can
ada, where old plants may
bloom earlier for their short
growing season with early
September freezing weather.
Cushion mums, with compact
mounded plant form, usually
grow from about 12 to 18 in
ches tall, according to variety.
in 1960, some 90 percent came
from lands other than those
owned by the pulp and paper
industry, and income from this
amounted to many millions of
dollars.
Shirley pointed out that far
mers and landowners could get
pine seedlings this year in un
limited quantities from five
Georgia Forestry Commission
nurseries and said the trees
were being “lifted” now and
readied for shipping. Orders
are still being accepted and he
suggested that at this season of
the year “citizens of the state
can find no better Christmas
' gift for themselves or their
families than a piece of land
planted in vigorous pine seed
lings, for they will not only
have the pleasure of watching
them grow, but also the satis
faction of selling them for a
profit in the next forty years.”

Flowers are borne in sprays on
short stems to practically cover
their plants with a colorful
mass of bloom. The sprays may
be taken for long lasting cut
flowers.
Decorative mums, with tall
er and more erect plant growth,
usually reach 2 feet or more in
height. They are usually lar
ger flowered and on longer
stems for cutting. Still larger
flowers may be obtained by
disbudding upper side bran
ches, leaving perhaps 6 or 8
main shoots or low branches to
produce the long stemmed ter
minal flowers. Preference is for
many more flowers per plant.
Pinching off the growing tips
of main shoot and side branches
when they are 6 to 8 inches
long will force out more
branches for a bushier plant
and many attractive blooms.
Staking plants is advisable
except for small flowered low
cushion mums. One stake per
plant with a loop of soft cord
or other material around a
plant should be sufficient to
hold it upright in rain and
wind when loaded with bloom.
Two stakes per plant is great
er assurance to guide and hold
side branches erect for straight
stems. Branches are brittle and
break off easily so stake plants
early, August being satisfac
tory.
Some early bloomers may
throw blooms in July or Au
gust, usually too hot or dry for
good bloom. Pinching back the

Light frosts don’t bother good
