Market Turkeys
At Best Weight,
Market turkeys as soon as
they reach desired weight and
finish, Extension Poutryman
J. H. Massey of the Universi
ty of Georgia College of Agri
culture advised turkey pro
ducers this week.
Holding turkeys beyond
the time when they have
reached their best market
weight can be costly, Mr. Mas
sey said.
For hens, the best weight
is about 14 to 15 pounds, and
for toms it is about 30 pounds.
Records show that when tur
keys reach these weights, the
amount of feed required to
put on additional weight goes
up sharply.
For example, for a hen to
go from 15 to 16 pounds may
require from eight to ten
pounds of feed. With feed cost
ing about three and one-half
cents per pound, this one ex- '
tra pound of weight would
cost the producer from 28 to
35 cents. In this case the feed
cost alone would be as high
or higher than what the extra
weight would bring.
