Sales Shows
Increase July-Sept.
Retail sales during the third
quarter of 1960 registered sl,-
281,551,955 as compared to sl,-
262,993,055 during the same
period last year, a State Cham
ber of Commerce survey show
ed today.
Third quarter business vol
ume in Newton County totaled
$4,917,658 this year compared
with the $4,674,674 for the
same period in 1959, the sur
vey showed.
Bibb Christmas
Tree Tuesday
Porter Gym
PORTERDALE — The Annual
Community Christmas Tree spon
sored by the Bibb Manufacturing
Company will be held on Tuesday
afternoon, Dec. 20, 1960. in Porter
Gymnasium.
Children of the white employees
will come at five o'clock. Children
of the colored employees will come
at six o'clock.
Appropriate programs are being
prepared for both parties and will
prove inspiring.
Tickets will be given in the mills
by the overseers for children of
employees who do not attend the
Porterdale School.
Tickets will be given at school
to those children in school and for
pre-school age brothers and sist
ers at home.
Tickets will be given at the
school office for pre-school child
ren of employees living in Porter
dale whose parents will call for
them either on Friday, Dec. 16 or
Monday. Dec. 19, from eight to
four-thirty.
For those children who cannot
attend the parties on Tuesday
afternoon, boxes will be exchang
ed for tickets at the Porter Gym
nasium on Wednesday morning,
December 21, from seven o'clock
to eleven o'clock ONLY.

1960 Census Figures Given For Newton County
Covington,
Oxford Show
Marked Gain
An Advance Report of the.
final population count for 1960
has been issued by the Bureau
of the Census and the report
contains the complete figures
on Newton County.
The County population gain
over the 10-year period 1950-
1960 shows that Newton Coun
ty gained 814 people. The po
pulation in 1950 was 20,185 and
the figure announced last week
is 20.999.
The official population figure
for Covington was announced

Seven Boys Rounded Up
With Big Burglary Loot
Covington City Police have arrested seven local teen
agers in connection with a series of break-ins and automobile
accessory thefts in the county over a span of several months.
The arrests came as a result of painstaking work by Cov
ington Police, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Agent Ar
thur Hutchinson and Newton County Sheriff's Office.
