Porterdale School Speaks
Miu Ramsey's Sixth Grad*
Fifteenth Week
A fire drill started off one
of the most exciting days we
ever lived. For days, we plan
ned to have a trip to Coving
ton. Mr. Bill Austin in his big
yellow bus took nineteen boys
and girls and our wonderful
teacher, Miss Martha Ramsey,
on our tour.
The home of Mr. and Mrs.
Wendell Crowe, Sr. was our
first stop. We saw a collection
of shells, a sailfish, and antique
furniture. The names of some
shells were: Angel Wing, Tur
kcy Wing, Butterfly, Sea
Horse, Juno, Old Maid Curl,
Baby Tooth, Bleeding Tooth,
Japanese Fan, Star Fish, Boat,
Olive, Turban, Tree Shells,
Kitten’s Paw, and Lion’s Paw.
We especially liked Mrs.
Crowe’s antique fireplace with
this inscription: “East and West
Home is Best”. We liked her
paintings, too, as we have been
making paintings of our own.
She was such a sweet hostess
and gave us refreshing cokes
and cookies.
We walked to the Newton
County Library where Mrs.
lola Dietz, librarian, and Mrs.
Laura Dodson took us on an
interesting tour. We saw many
books and listened to records.
We believe everybody re
membered something different
about the City Hall, our next
stop. This is a beautiful new
building. There were: Fire De
partment, Courtroom Coun
cil Chamber, Police Depart
ment, Voting Booths, and Util
ities Machines, to name a few
important things and places.
We enjoyed demonstrations by
the firemen and policemen. The
drive-in window fascinated us.
Mr. Rodney Floyd, Mr. Clay
ton Bailey, Mr. W. J. Lane, and
Miss Glenda Yancey became
our good friends and guides.
We were happy to see two his
toric windows there also.
Mr. Bob Greer and Mr. Leo
Mallard, Jr. met us at the
Covington News Office. What
fun we had learning and see
ing how newspapers were
printed. The Bibb Recorder was
on the press. (We received it
at school that same afternoon.)
We boarded Mr. Austin’s
bus again for another thrilling
visit to Miss Ramsey’s home on
Floyd Street. She let us wan
der all around inside and out
side her pretty brick home.
We laughed when she showed
us a ten inch television set and
her new modern white Prin
cess telephone. Everything was
pretty!
It was time for lunch when
we came back to school. All of
us were really hungry, too.
We will always remember
Thursday, December 8. as a
very special one. We brought
home lots of memories and
souvenirs. They were: an olive
shell from Mrs. Crowe’s home,
booklets about Georgia from
the library, and printing plates
from the News office.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick's Sixth Grade
Mrs. Henry Fitzpatrick's
Sixth Grade wrote poems about
Christmas which they wanted
to share with friends and fam
ilies.
Out of doors
The sound of bells!
In the kitchen
Spicey smells!
P ne and holly
Bright and gay!
Christmas
Fille the home today!

Christmas Toys
Momie, Mommie, come and see.
What dear Santa left for me;
Daddy, Daddy, come and see,
All the toys under the Christ
mas tree.
Phyllis Morrell
Christmas Season
Early to bed, early to rise,
I shall have a bike to ride,
And a boat to sail at lowtide.
Santa will leave a toy the right
size;
I Love December
I love December
Because I can remember
How Christ lay on the hay
And Wise Men came to say:
“Hail to our King”!
I love December
Because I can remember
The brightest star
That shone with all its might
Long ago on Christmas Night!
Rita Rutledge
Christmas Is OK
Christmas is a fine day
For children to play,
And for children to say
And hope everyone is OK.
The children sing and play
Sing carols and pray to God;
For Santa Claus is coming to
day
And to bring our toys OK.
Sharon Maddox
Christmas Is Here
Christmas is the time of year
When Santa comes with great
cheer.
Bells are ringing.
Sleighs are jingling.
People riding,
Children gliding;
Down through the snow,
Away they go!
Oh, what cheer,
Christmas is here!
Anne Wilder
Christmas Season
Christmas Eve is coming!
This we all know.
The children will play in the
snow;
Their faces will all be aglow.
Santa will bring toys
To al! the good girls and boys.
Everyone will be full of cheer
When Christmas Day is here.
Brenda Kitchens
We Thank Thee
We thank Thee, now, O
Father,
For all things bright and good,
Especially Mrs. Fitzpatrick
We think she’s very good.
Accept the gifts we offer,
For all Thy love imparts.
And what Thou most desirest,
Our humble, thankful hearts.
Patricia Rutledge
Santa
Santa coming, with lots of toys
For all the good girls and boys.
Santa’s coming all dressed in
red
With a big bag placed upon his
sled.
A shirt left for me
And on the front was a great
big T.
Santa left father a big clock,
He came to the door and went
“knock, knock".
On that night while I was
sleeping
Down the chimney he came
creeping;
He left lots of toys
Toys, just for boys!
This, of course, is fine with me
At Christmastime as you can
see.
Tommy Thomason
Christmas Day
Christmas Day will soon be
here.
Full of peace, joy. and cheer.
Girls and boys will get many
toys
And people will be filled with
joys.
Santa Claus will be on his way
Riding in a pretty red sleigh.
Christmas Day will soon be
here.
Then a very happy New Year.
Christmas Day comes but once
a year.
We celebrate it with lots of
cheer;
Santa will bring us lots of
toys,
For all the good girls and boys.
Danny Johnson
Santa
The night was light.
The moon was bright.
I saw a man during the night.
He wore a red suit.
Then I saw a black boot,
His bag was full of fruit;
Also toys for all the boys.
He was jolly
For me, he left a little red
trolley.
