Covington Mills Employees Honored At Awards Banquet
197 Receive Pins, Watches,
Bracelets in 10-47 Yr Group
Covington Mills, Incorporated held its First Annual Awards
Banquet Saturday night at the Ficquett School Cafeteria
and it was a memorable occasion for some 197 employees
w’ o were signal’y honored for their service over a span
of 57 years.

record of 47 years service.
Mr. Brown along with Mrs.
T.iUa Blair, now retired who
had a record 55-years until she
retired in 1958. were among
the elite honored guests at the
banouet. The 40 year and above

introduced the guest speaker.

From the time the veteran
employees arrived at the gaily
decorated cafeteria the even
ing was one prevalent with the
Christmas spirit. Soft hi - fi
Christmas music welcomed the
throng to their special tables,
laden with C^ricfroas decora
tions and individual place
cards. Throughout the evening
a drawing was held for attrac
tive door prizes.
Rev. White’s humorous
speech, interspersed with hom
ev jokes about his early life on
the farm in Elbert County.
Many oldtimers present espec
ially appreciated Rev. White’s
jokes which had their back
ground on country life some 40-
50 vears ago.
Much of the evening the focal
point of interest was the table
at which the 40-year and up
employees were seated. All
were present with the excep
tion of Coating A. Aaron.
Each of these employees were
awarded a Hamilton wrist
watch with their name inscrib
ed on the back. The ladies in
the group wore double red car
nation corsages and the men
wore red boutonnieres.
Mr. Jolley made the awards
to the employees having up to
35 years service with the com- I
pany. Mr. Belcher made the

The banquet menu at the Covington Mills, Inc. First
Awards Banquet Saturday night at the E. L. Ficquett
Cafeteria had the most varied delicacies ever served
a banquet in Newton County in recent years.
Other than the choice of Roast Young Turkey or
Baked Virginia Ham. and the many vegetables and
salads, there was a choice of dessert that included six
kinds of pie or six kinds of cake.
Mrs. Loyd Alexander planned the elaborate meal
and had charge of the Ficquett School girls who did
the serving.
The menu included:

Mrs. Julia Reynolds, now
retired from Covington Mills,
really expressed her feelings
Saturday night when she was
awarded her Hamilton watch
and chain and bracelet. When
Mr. S. A. Belcher, Jr., pre
sented the gifts to her she
said, “This is the happiest day
of my life. All this and today
is also my birthday.”

12th and the Mayor and five
councilmen were elected with
out opposition.

Retires After
50 Years
W G. Hays, who has been

50 years, is retiring from
that business as of January 1.

Mr. Hays is selling his busi
, ness to Mary and Ray Braswell,
। who will continue to operate the
firm at the same address on
Floyd Street.
“After more 50 years in
grocery busin I have de
i tided to take a little rest,” Mr.
i Hays stated.

Jack D, Green of Route i
Covington, died Friday. Decem
ber 9. as the result of an auto
mobile accident. He was a na
tive of Putnam County and was
30 years old at the time of h’s
death. He was emp’oyed ny
i Ideal Dairies and was a veteran
, of the Korean War.
The accident happened about
11 p. m. on P'e Covmrton to
Atlanta highway about a
fourth of a mile beyond the
Covington City limits.
Funeral services were held
Sunday afternoon at the Chapel*
of Harwell Funeral Home with
Rev. Leon Anthony pastor of
the Macedonia Baptist Church
!in Oxford, officiating. Inter
j ment was in Oxford. Serving as
