American Legion Auxiliary Met Monday,
Reports Given By Committee Chairmen
The American Legion Auxil
jary held its regular meeting
at the Legion Hall on Monday
night, January 9th at 7:30 p.m.
Mrs. Kathryn Greer, presi
dent, called the meeting to or
der and Mrs. Inez Walton,
Chaplain, led in prayer.
The meeting proceeded in
regular form with members re
peating the pledge to the flag
and the Preamble, after which
the “Star Spangled Banner”
gnd the Auxiliary song, “The
Blue and Gold” were sung.
Correspondence was read by
Mrs. Dorothy Cason, secretary,
who also gave the roll ecall of
sfficers and read the minutes
of the last meeting, which were
s roved.
Mrs. Sue Sims. treasurer,
gave her report, followed by
renorts from standing com
mittees. Among these was the
report given by Mrs. Thelma
Hill that the gifts to the Atlan
ta VA Hospital Christmas Joy

75.

food and money contributed by
the Unit at the Christmas par
ty.
Mis. Greer asked that mem
bers and friends of the Unit
contact her if they had any
magazines or 25¢ pocket-books
they wished to donate to At
lanta VA Hospital patients.
Present membership was re
ported by Mrs. Thelma Parr as
being 85. Mrs. Parr and the
membership committee urged
all eligible women in the coun
ty to remember the wounded
and the more fortunate Veter
ans by membership and parti
cipation in the Legion Auxili
ary’s work.
The Unit voted to proceed
with the Gold Bond Stamp pro
gram presented in November.
All members and friends of the
Unit are reminded to request
the back of their stamp books
when they are redeemed so
that the Unit may collect them
and use them for a community
project,

To Covington Garden Club Meeting
The January meeting of the
Covington Garden Club was
held on January 4 at 3:30
o'clock at the home of Mrs.
Harry Dietz.
The president, Mrs. ‘L. W.
Masten, called the meeting to
order a~d presided over the
business session, The Garden
Club Collect wes read as the
opening meditation.
Following the reports of of
ficers and committee chair
men, it was announced that the
District meeting of the Clubs
known as the Dogwood District
would be held on January 10
at the Capital City Club in
Brookhaven. Our president was
elected to go as the Club’s del
egate. The State Convention
will be held in Savannah in
April.
First Baptist Men’s Bible Class Met
Thursday at Home Os Belmont Dennis
The Men’'s Sunday School Class
of the First Baptist Church met
on Thursday night, January 5 at
the home of the teacher, Belmont
Dennis for a business meeting.
After the singing of “The Old
Ruzged Cross', with Mrs. Dennis
at the organ, Bernard Greer, class
president, presided over the meet
ing.
Rev. C. D. Cowan led the class
in prayer. The teacher distribut
ed printed instructions to the presi
dent, vice president, secretary and
the four group captains. These
instructions were from the South
ern Baptist Convention outlining
the duties of each officer, and the
four Group Captains. |
Group Captains were elected and
the class divided into four groups
as follows: Group Captain Barney
Mitcham, and assigned to his
oroup were: J. B. Greer, J. S.
Harris and Rev. Edward Hawkins.

with following members: J. L.
Collins, Alvin Rape, T. D. Trainer
and Belmont Dennis.

THECOVINGTON NEWS
- Mrs. P. M. Dearing, program
chairman, presented Mrs. A.
Belmont Dennis, who gave
some “helpful hints” on gard
ening in January.
Arrangements were centered
on the theme “Accenting One
Slossom.” Mrs., N. S. Turner
and Mrs. C. G. Henderson were
awarded red ribbons for their
arrangemen:s. Mrs. Turner and
Mrs. Dietz received ribbons for
their horticultural exhibits.
Delicious refreshments were
served by Mrs. Dietz and her
committee, Mrs. Dearing and
Mrs. Dennis.
The February meeting will
be held at the home of Mrs.
L. W. Masten. Arrangement
theme for the month will be
“Valentine.” All members are
urged to be present,
with the President J. B. Greer,
and vice president J. A. Wall, at
“an early date to study their duties,
and how they can best serve the
class. Each Group Captain will
call the men on his grouo each
week, and report an absent mem
ber of his group, explaining the
absence, whether ill or out of
town, and each captain and his
group will form a visitation com
mittee to call on all ill members,
and others, and to contact all
newcomers who are Baptists and
prospective class members. The
class will hold a monthly class
meeting in the future to attend to
all business.
The President called for sugges
tions for a name for the class other
than Men's Class. It was voted to
call the class ‘‘The Fellowship
Class’’ which is a suggested name
by the Sunday School Board for a
mans class. They also suggested
class colors as Maroon and White;
Motto: “Growing with the Mast
er.” Aim: “To interpretate Chris-'
tian principles to growing men.”
Bible Verse: 2nd Peter 3:18. Song:
“My Desire.”” They voted to order
a Class Pennant and many of them
ordered Class Pins. |
Following the business meeting
a delightful social hour was enjoy
ed. Mrs. Dennis assisted by Mr}

the Methodist Episcopal Church,
South, which was compiled by
Mrs. J. H. Barton Sr. The history
was most interesting and informa
tive.

the Society who have joined dur
ing 1960. These eight new mem
bers are: Mrs. J. H. Barton Jr.,
Mrs. Pierce Cline, Mrs. Andy
Autry, Mrs. Nelson Hoffman, Mrs.
J. C. Ellis, Mrs. W. C. Nimmo,
Mrs. A. F. Peek and Mrs. R. C.
