Community Efforts Increases
Cotton Yields and Profits
Farmers of Carnegie Com
munity in Randolph County
have united their efforts un
der the leadership of County
Agent Henry Trussell to in
crease cotton yields and farm
profits, says W. H. Sell, agron
omist of the University of Geor
gia Extension Service.
It all began in the winter of
1957 when farmers from Car
negie were discussing the trou
ble they had had during the
1957 growing season with cot
ton insects. Agent Trussell
guided the thoughts of t h e
community members toward a
cotton short course in January
1958.
Approximately 100 farmers
and community members at
tended this educational pro
gram where all phases of cot
ton production were discussed
and recommendations foF maxi
mum cotton profits were made
by the Extension Service.

Farmers were advised to be
gin their 1958 crops by taking
soil tests of each field to de
termine the amount of lime
and fertilizer needed to produce
good yields.
Cotton growers were also
given recommendations or va
rieties, plant spacing and
cultural practices. Emphasis
was also placed on insect con
trol. Farmers were advised to
use spray equipment a n d in
secticides for insect control.
They were also advised to ap
ply early season application of
insecticides to control over
wintered weevil and thrips.
Mid and late season applica
tions of insecticides were to
be made on 5-day intervals ac
cording to insect infestation as
determined from field inspec
tion.
Their success was outstand
ing. When harvest was com
pleted in the fall of 1958, the
Carnegie. Community farmers
had averaged more than 700
pounds of lint per acre.
These same results have been
repeated during 1959 and 1960
with more and more farmers
joining in the community wide
program.
Farmers and County Agent
Trussell estimate that the com
munity cotton program has in
creased the average yield of
cotton approximately one-half
bale per acre on more than
1,000 acres. The Carnegie Com
munity now serves as a cotton
demonstration for several sur
rounding counties.
Crops Getting One-Fifth
Needed Lime
Lime needs of Georgia soils
are estimated at two to three
million tons each year. How
ever less than 400,000 tons of
lime are sold in the sitate each
year. This indicates that less
than one-fifty of the lime
needed to maintain soils for
top crop production is used
each year, according to P. J.
Bergeaux, Extension agrono
mist at the University of Geor
gia College of Agriculture.

Research Tests
Effect of Grazing
Upon Small Grains
Georgia farmers who grow
oats, wheat or rye for grain
can safely graze or clip these
small grains for supplemental
winter forage through mid-
February, provided adequate
nitrogen is applied, according
to research conducted at the
College Experiment Station of
the University of Georgia Col
lege of Agriculture.
The protein content and ker
nel size of grain from plots of
oats, wheat and rye which re
ceived 60 and 120 pounds of ni
trogen per acre and which
were not clipped and clipped
on January 15, February 15,
and March 15 were compared.
The tests were made by Agron
omist H. D. Morris at Athens.
Morris found that 120 pounds
of nitrogen increased the pro
tein content of all the small
grains as compared to 60
pounds of nitrogen, except for
the March 15 clipping where
only rye showed an increase.
While clipping to February
15 tended to lower the protein
content of the grain, especial
ly at the high nitrogen level,
the 120 pounds of nitrogen
more than compensated for the
clipping effect. Grain receiv
ing the higher nitrogen rate
and clipped to February 15 in
variably contained a higher
protein content than non-clip-

Seek to liaise
$345,198 March 5
Methodists m Georgia will
attempt to raise $345,198 in an
Expansion Day offering on
March 5. The offering will
benefit ten major causes of de
nomination in the state.
“Together We serve. . .” is
the theme for this year’s ob
servance. All promotion in lo
cal churches is being built
around the story of Albert Du
rer’s painting, "The Praying
Hands.” Durer, a German ar
tist of the 18th century, paint
ed the work when he saw his
ped grains which received 60
pounds of nitrogen.
“This research shows that
grazing or clipping small grain
does not lower the value of
the grain for food or feed when
protein content is used as the
criterion,” Morris said.
“High nitrogen fertilization
of dual-purpose small grain
may be of value in increasing
the protein content of the grain
as well as its general effect on
yield.
“Clipping to February 15 had
no effect on grain size and
consequently would not be ex
pected to affect the value of
the small grain for seed pur
poses,” he added.
