Mrs. Nettie Williams Is Speaker At
Porterdale Woman's Club Meeting
PORTERDALE — Morning
Division members of the Por
terdale Woman’s Club were
welcomed to their meeting on
January 17 by Mrs. Nina Day,
Chairman. The meeting was
opened at ten o’clock with the
group singing “Have Thine
Own Way. Lord”, accompanied
by Mrs. James Mitchell.
Minutes were read and ap
proved.
Fourteen members and four
visitors were present. Mrs. Wil
lie Jeffries received the atten
dance award.
Miss Mae Hardman gave a
report of activities which con
cerned the meeting of the
Night Division on the previous
evening. She also read names
of new selections in the Wo
man’s Club Library.
Committees were named for
the February meeting as fol
lows: Program. Miss Alice Cur
tis, Miss Sadie Polson. Refresh
ments, Mrs. Jim Hughes, Mrs.
L. B. Rice.
In the absence of program
chairman, Mrs. Frances Cason,
Mist Mae Hardman introduced
the guest speaker, Mrs. Nettie
Williams. Mrs. Williams based
her message on John 14 and
brought touching and inspir
ing thoughts about peace avail
able through Jesus Christ. Miss
Hardman expressed apprecia
tion from the entire member
ship for her devotional. Each
person was given a “Recipe for
the New Year" which she read

Marriage Os Miss Nina Allen And Harold
Hendry Solemnized In Lakeland Nuptials
The First Methodist Church
Chapel of Lakeland, Fla., was
the scene on Saturday morning
of the eleven o’clock nuptials in
which the marriage of Miss Ni
na Scott, Allen, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. George Scott Al
len. and Harold Merle Hendry,
-on of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Hen
dry of Thonotosassa, Fla., was
solemnized. The Rev. Dr. Clare
M. Cotton, pastor, performed
the impressive ceremony, mark
ed with simplicity and beauty.
The focal arrangement of
the altar, before which the
young couple spoke their wed
ding vows, was a white floor
basket of white gladiolus, pom
pon chrysanthemums and eme
rald fern. Seven branched ped
estal candelabra holding white
candles flunked the center ar
rangement.
Mrs. Frank Welch, organist,
rendered an appropriate pro
gram of favorite selections in
prelude to the ceremony.
Aaron Hendry, of Tampa,
brother of the groom, served as
best man.
The bride, given in marriage
by her father, wore a silk linen
sheath in capri blue, with which
she wore a small white floral
hat with matching blue trim
and brief veil. Her pumps were
dyed to match; and her gloves
and bag were white. She car
ried a white satin covered pray
er book, topped with white or
chids, showered with white sa
tin streamers and valley lilies.

Mrs. Dan Clower Was Hostess Monday
To Covington Service Guild Meeting
The Covington Service Guild
met on Monday afternoon at
the home of Mrs. Dan Clower
on Floyd Street with 23 mem
bers and two visitors present.
Mrs. Jim Mitchell read a
poem, "God Answers Prayer”,
as the devotional for the af
ternoon. This was followed by
the pledge to the flag and the
ehib collect.
Mrs. Clower introduced Bill
Hoffman of R a d i o Station
WGFS who gave a most in
formative talk on “Communi
cations”. A question and ans
wer period followed his talk.
Mrs. S. M Hay presided ov
er a beautiful installation ser
vice, at which time Mrs. Helen
Dickinson was installed as a
new member.
Mrs. J. W. Purcell presided
during the business session
which followed and she called
on the following for reports:

Allen Memorial Circle Met Thursday
With Mesdames Tribble, Lupo Hostesses

Memorial Methodist Church,
Oxford, met with Mrs. Earl
Tribble and Mrs. J. F. Lupo
on Thursday afternoon, Janu
ary 19. There were 13 mem
bers present.
Mrs. V Y. C. Eady presided
and, in the opening sentences,
spoke of "facing the New
Year with Steadfastness and
Confidence.” She then intro
duced the speaker, Mrs. Delma
Hagood, who is program chair
man of the Circle. Mrs. Ha
good’s topic was expressed in
the words "Jesus Christ as
Lord,” suggesting, in impres
sive detail, that if our lives
a* Christians are founded on
this ideal all departments of
the church’s ministry would be
more effective.
Myrtle Combs Circle Meeting Hears
Program On "Alcohol And Narcotics"
The Myrtle Combs Circle of
the First Baptist Church met
January 17, in the educational
building of the church with
Mrs. Grady Walton presiding in
the absence of the chairman,
Mrs. J. M. Allison.
The meeting was opened with
the group ainging, “Jesus Sa
ves”, accompanied by Mrs.
Walton. After repeating the
watchword in unison Mrs. J. S.
Harris led the opening prayer.
Twelve members answered roll
call after which reports were
given by various committees.

and only attendant, served as
matron of honor. She wore a
silk shantung sheath in toast,
which featured a shawl col
lar, with which she wore
, matching accessories. Her cor
sage was of yellow rosebuds.
For her daughter's wedding,
Mrs. Allen chose beige silk
shantung, with which she wore
a small, matching hat, and
bone acessories.
Mrs. Hendry, mother of the
groom, wore green, sheer wool
costume suit, with her small
hat and accessories in a har
monizing shade.
The New Florida Hotel was
the scene of the wedding break
fast at which the bride’s pa
rents were hosts immediately
following the wedding.
The table’s centerpiece was
the three tiered, white embos
' sed wedding cake, topped with
a nosegay of pink sweetheart
roses, showered with pink satin
' streamers. Pink tapers in three
branched, silver candelabra,
garnished with pink sweetheart
. roses, flanked the cake. Wed
; ding motif place cards further
emphasized the nuotial motif.

. be at home to friends at their

School.
Mrs. Frank Stone gave an
interesting report of the Kind
ergarten Christmas party.
Mrs. E. G. Trammell asked
for new members for the Hos
pital Auxiliary. She told of the
“Hospital Holiday”, which will
be held on July 4. The Service
Guild voted to cooperate and
will sponsor a booth on that
day.
The hostesses Mrs. Clower,
Mrs. Loyd Alexander and Mrs.
Jim Mitchell presided in the
dining room during the social
hour where coffee, tea, sand
wiches. cakes and mints were
enjoyed.
During the business session,
reports of the secretary and
treasurer were read. Two new
members were introduced and
added to the roll, Mrs. William
Cook and Mrs. R. C. Schneider.
The motion was made and car
ried to make a donation to the
Hymn Book Fund for the Jun
ior Department. Assignments
for the month of February
were distributed and the names
for the ill and shut-in mem
bers were suggested for cards.
Mrs. Eady announced that the
next meeting of the Circle
would be at the home of Mrs
Delma Hagood.
Mrs. Earl Cline led the de
votions and gave the closing
prayer.
During the social hour, the
hostesses, assisted by Miss
Bettye Tribble, served sand
wiches, cookies and coffee.

er, where guests were greeted.
Antique French compotes of
podocarpus and osmanthus foli
age formed twin arrangements
on the piano, in the living
room, where a dried arrange
ment of eucalptus was used on
the mantel.
Prior to the games, guests
were invited into the dining
room, where they were served

Has Program
On "Courtesy"
The Senior Tri-Hi-Y met
January 11. The meeting was
called to order by the Presi
dent, Jackie Latham. A very
inspiring devotional was pre
sented by Lanelle Huston. A
program on “courtesy” was
given in a form of a panel dis
cussion by Madelyn Bates,
Janelle Wood, Merie Paden and
Katie Jones led by Lanelle
Hutson.
This months school project
is for the club to sponsor
“courtesy week”.
The meeting was adjourned

Prospect MYF
The Prospect MYF met at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey
Simms Sunday night. The pro
gram was a Bible quiz on the
Book of Jonah. After the pro
gram refreshments were served
by Mrs. Simms and Mrs. Jol
ley. The young people would
like to thank them for the re
freshments and the Simms for
letting us meet in their home.
We were glad to have our
visitors from college, Alvin
Taylor and his friend from
New York, both attend col
lege in Central, South Carolina.
