Factory Worker
Buying Power
Down in Dec.
WASHINGTON. D. C.—Fac
tory workers’ buying power
dipped slightly between No
vember and December, a period
in which it usually rises, the
U. S. Labor Department’s Bu-
(Largest Coverage Any Weekly In The Stale)
reau of Labor Statistics report
ed.
Spending earnings (earn
ings after deduction of Federal
income and social security
taxes but before adjustment for
price changes) were virtually
unchanged for the factory
worker. In December these
earnings were $80.35 a week
for a worker with three de
-1 pendents, and $72.81 for a
‘ worker without dependents. Us
’ ually spendable earnings rise
to their highest point in De- 1
cember because of increases in
both hourly earnings a n d i
hours of work. This December i
a 2-cent rise in hourly earn- ।
ings was offset by a workweek j
decline of four - tenths of an <
hour, largely because of snow
storms in the New England and
Middle Atlantic States.
After taking into account the
small increase in consumer
prices, there was a reduction of
0.2 percent in factory workers’

buying power.
Compared with a year earl
ier, spendable earnings in tha
storm - affected month of De
cember 1960 were about 214
per cent lower and buying pow
er was about 4 percent lower.
The labor force, including
the Armed Forces, totaled 73.7
million in November i 960, ac
cording to the U. S. Labor De
partment’s Bureau of Labor
Statistics.
