SCHOOL NEWS
Mrs. Bonner's
Fifth Grade
Our class has had many ab
sences lately due to colds, vi
ruses and bad weather. We had
better attendance last week
and we hope everyone can stay
well.
We had a wonderful Valen
tine party last Friday. Sammy
Stowe’s mother was chairman
and many other mothers help
ed in different ways. We had
never seen prettier Valentine
cookies than they made. Many,
many thanks to all the mothers.
Our new officers for the
second semester are: Ronny
Capes, president; Tommy Aa
ron, vice - president; Cathe
rine Cowan, secretary; and
Mary Ann Dial, treasurer.
We have been hard at work
on outlining lately. Our English
books gave us a good start and
our reading work books gave
us lots of practice. We h a v e
done lots of outlining in So
cial Studies also. Everyone
agrees that it helps us to learn
easier and better. In science we
have really enjoyed our study
of space. Many pupils gave
interesting reports and others
worked on bulletin board dis
plays. We all drew pictures to
show something that we had
learned. We were all so inter
ested in “Ham’s” adventure in
to space and what he found out
that will help the astronauts.
We’ve all read and talked about
the astronauts and the prob
lems they face. We wonder
which one of the group will be
chosen to make the first hu
man space flight and when it
will be.
This week the groups read
ing in Engine Whistles and
Singing Wheels will take their
next reading achievement tests.

some new games, puzzles, pos
ters and other science materials.
We found some posters about
light and sound. They tell what
things can make light and
sound.
We have some new library
books. They are all about
people and animals. We find
them very interesting to read.
Last week in English we en
joyed making plays of stories.
One story we liked best was
“Cinderella”. Betti Carol Hoff
man was chairman of this play.
We thought she did well to put
the parts of the play together
(Largest Coverage Any Weekly Tn The State)
and to choose the persons to
play the parts.
Our Valentine party was
last Friday. We played post
man by putting our Valentine
boxes on our desks, closing our
eyes and the people in our
room put Valentines in our box
es. In the afternoon we open
ed our Valentines. The grade
mothers served delicious re
freshments. We would like to
; thank our grade mothers again
for a very nice party.
Many of us wrote Valentine
poems. Here is one written by
■ Susan Chester.
Valentine
February is the month of
hearts,
February, the fourteenth
Valentine starts.
Some are happy, some are
gay.
Some pictures are working,
and some just play.
They are sent to far - away
places
And then they find many
happy faces.
They go by air and they go
by steam.
They go by gas and they go
bv stream
PAGE SEVEN
But wherever they go, th*
wide world through,
They mean the same thing.
“I love Yem”!
By Susan Chester.
The question of w-hat is
“best” in a fishing rex! and
reel is often asked, according
to the Mercury outboard com
pany, and there is no reel an
swer. It all depends upon whal
you want to catch, they advise,
and how experienced you are.
Just like girls, they add, there’s
one made for everybody.
