Porterdale School Speaks
Miss Jordan's First Grade
The First Grade was de
lightfully entertained with a
Valentine Party on Tuesday
afternoon, February 14.
A game of hearts was fun in
which each child pinned a
heart on a big lacy heart. Ran
dy Cochran was lucky and
pinned his heart nearest the
center.
Cookies, Valentine candy,
cheri colas, and bubble gum
were served and enjoyed. It
was time for the mail then.
Everyone went into his own
mail and found the box full of
sweet Valentines. These af
forded much fun and pleasure
as each was read and admired.
Mrs. Onree Sellers, Mrs.
Frances Piper, Mrs. George
Cochran, Mrs. Charles Need
ham, and Mrs. John R. Massey
served as a committee for this
lovely party.
We were happy to have Mrs.
Johnny Bennett, Mrs. Gerald
Benedict, Mrs. Roy Capps, Mrs.
Russell Parker, and Miss Pen
ny Parker enjoy the party
with us.
Jane Polk and Joe Wayne
Sellars were chosen as popular
Queen and King of the room
for the Valentine Carnival.
The Circus was fun with the
trained dog, tight rope walk
ers, jolly fat ladies, a lovely
elephant, clowns, and weight
lifters. Raymond Parr was the
Master of Ceremonies. Harold
Penn made a good trainer for
the animals.
Miss Trippe’s Fifth Grade
On February 14, we had our
Valentine Party. We would
like to thank our mothers for
such a nice party. We had cup
cakes, ice cream with a cher
ry on top, bubble gum, and
candy hearts. On the top of the
cup cakes were rings for the
girls. There were cowboy chains
decorating the boys’ cup cakes.
The mothers who were at
the party were: Mrs. James E.
Cason, Mrs. C. B. Dimsdale,
and Mrs. Roy Capps. About six-

Miss Ramsey’s Sixth Grade
February, the Birthday
Month, has been an exciting
month for us. We would like
to tell you some of the things
we have been doing.
First, the PTA announced
that they would have a Valen
tine Carnival so our grade de
cided to have an Art Show,
Hat Sale, and Surprise Show.
Our Art Show was held in
our room and the dark room.
Pictures painted by the boys
and girls pertaining to events
in February were attractive
ly arranged on red and blue
paper. Other art activities in
cluded eggshell mosaics, clay
objects, stitcher y, carving,
plaster molding, weaving, fing
er painting, printing, papier
mache animals and buggy, de
corated bottles, gravel pic
tures, thread pictures, candle
making stained glass mosaics,
ABC cereal pictures, and plas
tic straw pictures. We are still
working on a Pioneer sand ta
ble. We especially appreciate
our covered wagon made by
Diane Watson and her father.
The teacher likes to hear of
parents taking an interest in
their children’s work and do
ing creative activities with
them.
Our Surprise Show caused
a great deal of interest as we
showed a Puff Fish that had
traveled all the way from
Guadaloupe, having been
brought to us by Mrs. W. W.
Crowe of Covington. She has
been very kind to us and we
appreciated her thinging of
us during this trip. We
shall always remember her
party for us.
You might not believe it but
our Hat Sale was a big success.
We had a huge leafless tree
loaded with hats in the hall
way outside the door of our
room. We were thrilled to
know that our shows brought
in so much money for the PTA.
We might want your hats
again for a carnival.
Last week, we enjoyed of
ficer Pressley’s Junior Traffic
Safety Club Dog Show spon
sored by American Trucking
Associations. Immediately fol
lowing the show, we exchang
ed Valentines and had ice
cream.
PTA was a red letter day for
us as we presented the pro
gram emphasizing February
birthdays including the Found
ers’ Day of PTA, Dr. J. B.
Mitchell’s birthday, and im
portant contributions attribut
ed to this month. We enjoyed
painting the pictures to illu
strate the events. The class
visited Dr. Mitchell’s office on
Monday, February 20, and pre
sened him his portrait as he
was unable to be with us on
PTA Night. The class also re
cited for him a tribute written
for us by Mrs. Annie Day.
Friday morning, we invited
Mrs. Crowe to come out and be
our guest and tell us about her
Caribbean Cruise. We decided
to invite Mrs. Douglas Rob
ertson’s Fourth Grade and Mr.
and Mrs. B. B. Snow to be
present also. We presented our
PTA program for all of them.
We enjoyed having them visit
our room and hope they will
return soon.
Another event of Februarj
which we enjoyed was a visil
from Mrs. Sybil Ellington’s
Kindergarten, the Jack and Jil
Kindergarten. We were happy
THE COVINGTON NEWS
that they recognized so many
of our pictures.
We are learning a Mexican
Dance, and all boys and girls
are enjoying this. We hope we
can do it for an audience some
time.
On Friday, the Galvanos
presented a program of Ha
waiian music played on elec
trified instruments. They gave
us some historical facts about
our fiftieth state.
This week, we shall be
thinking and working for the
March of Dimes. Let us all
give freely.
