Winner Named
In Jaycee 'Young
Farmers' Contest
Windle Taylor, Alma, Geor
gia, was named Georgia’s
‘•Outstanding Young Farmer”
of 1960 at a luncheon held in
his honor Saturday in Macon.
Keynote speaker at the
luncheon was J. W. Fanning,
Chairman, Division of Agricul
tural Economics, University of
Georgia. The presentation, held
at the Dempsey Hotel, was in
conjunction with the regular
board meeting of the Georgia
Junior Chamber of Commerce,
which co-sponsors the OYF
program with Southern Nitro
gen Company, manufacturer of
DIXIE Nitrogen.
LOW COST — HIGH VALUE
While framing lumber ac
counts for 90 percent of the
value of the average house, it
amounts to any 10 percent of
the total house cost, the South
ern Pine Association says. So
even on a modest budget, a
good quality home can readi
ly be afforded.

National 4-H Week
By MRS. HAZEL MALONE
(Home Demonstration Agent)
March 4-11 is National a-N
Week!.
This is an annual observant
with the purpose of paring ‘n ■
bute to the young 4-H stt:z«n«
in our community. It’s a pret
ty good bet you have a 4-H
member or a former 4-H mam
ber living next door or close
by. There are 146,396
members in Georgia’s 2,bit >o
cal 4-H Clubs. Georgia has the
second largest number of 4 H
members among our 50 states.
What about the 4-H program
m Newton county? Well, that'*
what I like to brag ao< ut
While I work with the girls
in the Club, I am also very
interested in the progress of
our boys. We have 9 4-H Clubs
in Newton county with a com
bined membership of 450 boys
and girls. To be eligible for
membership, our boys and girls
must be between the ages of
10 and 20. To continue their
membership, they have to at-

DONORS, LOCAL LEADERS
AND SPONSORS OF 4-H
We’re proud of the youth
minded folks in business and
industry who help to make 4-H
work possible. Without them,
4-H would not be the huge ।
youth organization it is today. I
They deserve a salute also dur. ’
ing this special Week.
In Newton county, we have'
public-spirited men and wo
men giving freely of their ■
time, effort, and money every i
year to help 4-H. These out- ।
standing community men and
women serve as volunteer lo
cal leaders, donors, and spon
sors.
THE MEANING AND SCOPE
OF 4-H
Four-H is the largest rural
youth organization in the
world!
It is a nation-wide voluntary :
organization in which young j
people “learn by doing” to best j
use their talents, opportuni-)
ties and responsibilities for de
veloping themselves and their I
communities. Their dedication
is best set forth in the pledge
taken by each 4-H member:
I pledge my Head to clearer
thinking
My Heart to greater loyalty,
My Hands .to larger service,
And my Health to better
living
For my club, my community. I
and my country.
Four-H is a part of the Co
operative Extension Service,
College of Agriculture, Univer
sity of Georgia and the U. S.
Department of Agriculture.
The Clubs are organized and
conducted under the immedi
ate supervision of home dem- ;
onstration agents like myself
and county agents like Mr.
Hunt here in Newton county. |
4-H COLORS
The green and white colors
of 4-H mean something to i
every 4-H’er. The white back
ground of the 4-H Club flag
symbolizes purity and high
ideals. The green of the 4-H I
emblem represents nature’s
most common color in the great
out-of-doors. It is emblematic
of youth, life, and growth.
EDUCATION. INSPIRATION
AND RECREATION
The entire 4-H program pro
vides activity to help develop
al! phases of the young 4-H’ers
lives.
Education is received through
the many demonstration pro-1
jects such as livestock, garden. I
clothing, food preparation,
poultry, home beautification,
entomology, tractor, automo
tive care, and many others. I
There are projects for those on
the farm and those in towns
and cities. Members learn
leadership and citizenship. They .
have an opportunity to preside
over meetings, speak in public,
and participate in community i
and county -wide activities ’
such as camps, picnics, tours. '
and community service cam
paigns.
Inspiration is provided by the
religious programs held in con
nection with all their events
At summer camps for example,
they attend church services
regularly and participate in
vesper services planned for
themselves.
Recreation Is provided for the
physical development of their I
bodies. They swim, dance.;
play ball, and participate in
many other recreational acti-1
vities for this purpose
Recently, I heard a speaker
refer to a sign on a country
dirt road that read, “choose i
wisely the rut you will take
You will be in it for the next j
18 miles.” Our young 4-H
peop’e have chosen that rut of
life they will be in for the,
THE COVINGTON NEWS
next few years. Let’s encour
age and help them in whatever
way we can. Certainly during
this National 4-H Week, March
4-11, let’s pat them on the
back —they deserve it.
What 4 H Has
Meant To Me
In short 4-H has meant al
most everything. It’s meant
knowledge, know how, experi
ence, and enjoyment.
When I first started I knew
nothing about chickens, cows
or anything that had to do
with the country. But 4-H took
care of it. It showed me sci
entifically, how to do it. So, I
decided to get chickens. The
chickens were very profitable,
giving me experience, a good
time, and profits. So in 4-H
you can do anything you want
to.
4-H has meant very much to
me and it can to you too.

My 4 - H Dress Revue Project
During my years of 4-H
Club Work I have learned a
great deal about sewing which
I took as a project.
Last year I entered the
Newton County Dress Revue
and won first place. I was sup
pose to attend District Project
Achievement Meeting bun un
fortunately I had the mumps
and was unable to attend.
Since I didn’t get to go I
thought I would enter the Dress
Revue again this year, so I
did and again I won first place
I plan to attend District Pro
ject Achievement Meeting this
year. I also entered by skirt
in the Newton County Fair
last year and won second place
there.
By winning the first place
in the Newton County Dress
Revue I was invited to attend
the 4-H Club Awards Banquet
which I enjoyed very much. I
(Largest Coverage Any Weekly In The State) Thursday. March 9. 1961
received an award there on
clothing and was very proud
of it. I hope to attend the Ban
quet again this year.
I have thoroughly enjoyed
my years of 4-H Club Work. I
go to Livingston School and
attend the 4-H Club meeting.-
there. I have been in the 4-H
Club for two years.

If a child awakes promptly
with energy and an appetite
for a good breakfast, he like
ly has had enough sleep, ac
cording to Miss Audrey Mor
gan, head of the Extension
Service family life department
at the University of Georgia.
On the other hand, she says,
if the child has to be prodded
to get up each morning and is
played out early in the day, he
probably needs more sleep.
