’ We had a very pleasant sur
| prise on Lesslynn’s birthday.
| Mrs. Dobbs served the first
| grade very pretty and delicious
| cupcakes and ice cream, Every
one had fun singing Happy
Birthday to Lesslyn and xhei
had lots of assistance blowing
out the seven candles.
Our attendance has been
good in spite of bad roads and
weather. We are anxious that
everyone come regularly from
now to the close of school.
Second Grade
l We are doing a lot of oral
reading in audience situations.
'We have discussed the prac
tices which make a good oral
reader and each one of us can
decide by these rules if we
need to practice reading aloud‘
more often. ‘
Most of us enjoy the lovelyi
new books we get from our own
library which Mrs. Hardeman
helps us select for use in our
room., We also have 31 library
books from the bookmobile. We
enjoy there books. One of the
activities that we are enjoying
very much is learning poems
can be fun. Our favorite is:
“The Secret”. For several days
we have been enjoying n e w
science experiences, We have
new things brought in each
day that make us look into our
science books to find out about
such things as frog eggs, tad
poles, terrapins, worms a n d
others. Even the daffodils that
have been in our room provid
ed a science lesson one day
when we talked about the blos
som, petals, stamen and pistils.
We are looking forward to
our spring holidays and hope
we have some lovely kite fly
ing weather.

We are very thrilled that
spring holidays are so near.
Rosemary Robertson will go to
Milwaukee, but the rest of us
‘will stay home and visit re
latives and friends.
We have been trying to have
perfect attendance but it seems
impossible with so many germs
going around. Randy Kirkus
and Donna Kay King are ab
sent today. Donna Kay is in
the hospital, but we hope she
will be back with us soon.
Those of us who are reading
in “If I Were Going”, are en
joying it very much. We are
also enjoying our new films on
science. Mr. Paden showed us
a good film on air pressure to
day.
We were happy to have Ran
dy Kirkus and Rhonda George’s
mothers visit us last week. Mrs.
Kirkus brought us a giant box
of tissues. Mrs. George brought

e ——————————————
Good morning, first to the Irish,
and then to everyone else. 'l‘his{
is the week when St. Patrick’s
Irish will hold the spotlight in tra
dition, if not otherwise, and we are
always ready to pay honor where
honor is due.
When St. Patrick’s Day comes
we are all happy — whether Irish
or not for we know that we are
just around the corner from
spring. This year however, with
a few warm days the flowers a
round Salem haven’t waited for
the official day of spring, for we
are now enjoying many beautiful
blossoms that usually don’'t come
until after the official day of sp
ring.
Speaking of spring brings to
mind that both teachers and pupils
will be enjoying spring holidays
from school next week and the
G. W. Ramseys and Mr. and Mrs.
Douglas Robertson and daughters,
Rosie and Susan will be enjoying
a visit to Milwaukee, Wis., for a
visit with G. W. Ramsey Jr. and
his lovely family. We are sharing
their excitement over their forth
coming visit and wish them the
best of luck on their trip.
We in our own family are happy
over the recovery that our niece,
Margaret Ann Yancey is making
from her serious illness. In visit
ing her, she had this word to say,
“l am so grateful to everyone for
the many acts of kindness to me
during my illness’’ and if she con
tinues to improve I am sure it
won't be long before her friends
will be seeing her back in her
usual place in school and commun- |
ity life. ‘
