The March meeting of the
Covington Book Club met Mon
day afternoon, March 13, at
the home of Mrs. Godfrey
Trammell with 15 members
present, Mrs. Donald Stephen
son, president, presided a n d
welcomed Mrs. Charles Cand
ler, club guest. The February
minutes were read and approv
ed.
The program was delightful
ly presented by Mrs. R. M.
Paty, who chose “Astronomy”,
as her subject. Mrs. Paty’s re
search was derived from sev
eral books but the majority of
her information was taken from
two books written by Harlow

geographical aspects of t h e
sun, moon and other heavenly
bodies, as well as their effects
on weather and objects per
taining to the earth. Statistics
as to size and distance of var
ious planets in relation to the
earth further proved the mag
nitude of our universe.
The group was enthusiastic
in their response to the inter
esting and entertaining pro
gram.
Delicious refreshments were
served by the hostess.

Observed At Zion Baptist Church
The Week of Prayer for
Home Missions was observed
at Zion Baptist Church Mon
day, March 6 through March 9,
with the following programs
presented:
Monday, March 6: the group
met at the home of Mrs. Floyd
George with 16 members and
two Sunbeams present. Mrs.
Nell McCollough, Prayer Chair
man, was in charge of t he
program and devotional. Song
“Near to the Heart of God”,
was followed by the scripture
from Romans 10: 1- 15. Mrs.
Jim Pennington sang “Jesus
Calls Us”, as a solo. Those par
ticipating on the program were:
Mrs. Fred Dillard, “The Wist
ful Ones; Mrs. Dewey Mitchell,
“Waifs and Homeless Ones”;
Mrs. Ernest McCollough, “The
Wandering Wayfarers”.
After a prayer period a musi
cal reading was given by Mrs.
Edgar Hull, accompanied at the
piano by Mrs. Ernest McCol
lough.
Refreshments were served by
the hostess.
Tuesday, March 7: The
group met at the home of Mrs.
Clyde King with 19 members
and two Sunbeams present.
Mrs. Paul Guthrie was in charge
of the program.

The parlors of the Smith
home were lovely with spring

The president, Mrs. Hiram El
lis, opened the meeting with the
class repeating in unison the
121st Psalm.
The minutes of the April
meeting were read by Mrs. G.
C. Watson. Other business in

| report from Mrs. C. C. Estes of

On Book “Basic Christian Beliefs"
PORTERDALE — Mrs. Hen
ry Berry, Mission Study Lead
er, welcomed guests and mem
bers to the Mission Study at
the Julia A. Porter Memorial
Methodist Church on Tuesday,
March 7. She introduced the
book “Basic Christian Beliefs”
written by Frederick C. Grant.
The Rev. H. H. Dillard, pas
tor of the church, gave t h e
first chapter which he opened
with prayer. Mrs. Richard Bel
lairs next gave the two suc
ceeding chapters after which
the ladies recessed for a social
hour and covered dish supper
in the church basement.
It was a pleasure to have
the ladies of the Shiloh Metho
dist Church unite for this ser
vice. Mrs. Owen, wife of t h e
pastor of the guest church, re
turned thanks.
The second session began
with special hymns by t h e
Rev. and Mrs. Owen, accom=-
panied by Mrs. Milford John

Mrs. Ruth Taylor gave the
devotional using “Garden” as
her subject, “The Biblical Gar
den”, “The Garden of Eden”
and “The Hanging Gardens of
Babylon,” also the beautiful
spring flowers and gardens.
Several interesting contests
were enjoyed during the social
hour.
The guests were invited into
the dining room where punch,
sandwiches, cakes and nuts
were served from a beautiful
table overlaid with a white cut
work cloth. Camellias were
used as the central table decor
ation.
Mrs. Berry expressed grati
tude for this contribution to
the program and asked t h e
President of the Shiloh W. S.
C. S. to introduce the speaker
for the three remaining chap
ters, Mrs. Leonard Standard of
the Salem Methodist Church
W.S. C. S. brought the 1 a s t
portion of study and closed this
session with prayer.
Although there were only
thirty persons to participate in
this study, it was a great suc
cess.
Mrs. Berry thanked each
person for her participation and
cooperation.
Mrs. H. H. Dillard closed the
meeting with prayer.

Girl Reserves
Met Monday
On Monday, March 6, we had a
Girl Reserves meeting. We could
not get inside the clubroom as it
was accidentally locked, so we met
on the grass outside.
Mr. Sailers room had charge of
the program for this meeting. My
ron Huckaby was responsible for
the program. Rhonda Jeffries and
Nan Smallwood read the Twenty
third Psalm for our devotional.
Wanda Daniel led us in the Lord’s
Prayer. Diane Wells and Mary
Beam led us in singing ‘“America.”
Gayle Allen read a poem. We all
read our slogan. Nan Small
wood and Linda Jeffries read a
poem.
With our benediction, we were
dismissed to go home.

Fidelis Matrons Class Held March
Meeting With Mrs. L. H. Smith
The home of the Linton Smiths
was permeated with the perfume
of springs loveliest flowers, on
Thursday afternoon when Mrs.
Smith, and her aunt, Mrs. Tom
Heard were co-hostesses to the
Fidelis Matrons Class of the First
Baptist Church.
Exquisitely executed arr a nge
ments of white flowering peach
and red quince brightened the
living room, and the dining tables
centerpiece was of lovely spring
daffodils. In the absence of the
president, Mrs. Nunn, the vice
president, Mrs. J. S. Harris pre
sided over the business session.
The meeting was opened with
prayer by Mrs. E. B, Rogers,
after which she gave a beautiful
devotional centered around the
15th chapter of Matthew.
Mrs. James Biggers, secretary,
had 13 members answer to roll
call with Bible verses, after which
she read the minutes of the Feb
ruary meeting, and they were ap
proved as read. Corresponding
Secretary, Miss Louise Skelton, re
ported having written ten cards to
those who were ill and bereaved,
as well as those members who
had birthdays. :
Mrs. Belmont Dennis, teacher,
reported Mrs. W. B. Alford still
shut-in with injured ankle; Mrs.
Olivia Edwards ill with eye infec
tion; Mrs. Piper absent due to ill
ness of daughter; Mrs. Bessie
Hunt is ill: Mrs. Wall not able to
attend; Mrs. Grady Hays husband
ill with virus and Mrs. Edwards’
husband recuperating slowly, but
able to sit up some that day. She

ers of all members for those who
were ill. The class is delighted
that Mrs. J. J. Collins is improv
ing and able to sit up some.
She reported that two members
had March birthdays, Mrs. Paul
Adams, March 6th and Mrs. Olivia
Edwards, March 26th and the
group sang ‘“‘Happy Birthday” for
them.
The class asked for prayers for
Mrs. John Alford, formerly of
Covington, who had sustained a
broken shoulder. Her Atlanta ad
dress was given as 1033 Citadel
Dr.,, N. E, Atlanta. Our best
wishes go to her, along with our
prayers for an early recovery.
By motion made by Mrs. R. B.
Yancey, the class will draw
names on Sunday morning, Mar.
19th for Secret Pals. So every
member of the Class is urged to
be present to draw a name next
Sunday.
The teacher spoke of a wonder
ful book she studied while in Flo
rida, “The Ten Commandments’
and a motion was made that we
take up one Chapter of this book
to be taught at our Monthly Class
Meeting.
At the conclusion of the business
session a delightful social hour
was enjoyed when Mrs. Heard,
assisted by Mrs. Avery and others
served delicious strawberry short
cake.

PORTERDALE -— On March
13, Boy Scout Troop No. 207
made plans for a Court of
Honor. Most of the boys will
get Tenderfoot Badges. One
will get Second Class Badge
‘and one will get First Class
‘Badge. Two boys will also re
iceive merit badges.
The Court of Honor will be
held at the Scout Hut on Mon
day night, March 20. All Scouts
and parents of Scouts are in
vited to come.

The Newton-Rockdale Sub-
District met March 6, at New
born Methodist Cnurch. The
program was opened with song
after which the minutes were
read and roll called.
During the business session
it was decided we would hold
our basketball tournament
March 14-16. Bill Allgood and
Jimmy Henderson were in
charge of the program for the
evening.
Refreshments were enjoyed
by everyone at the close of
the meeting.
