"Bishop's Appeal"
Set Sunday In
Georgia Churches
Bishop John Owen Smith,
resident bishop of the Atlanta
area of the Methodist Church,
this week issued an appeal to
348,315 Georgia Methodists in
1,584 churches asking them to
help combat the world crisis in
Africa.
The Atlanta bishop’s direc
tive to churches throughout the
state is a part of a nation-wide
“Bishop’s Appeal” for Africa
among all Methodists. The
church will attempt to raise
$2,500,000 on Sunday, April 30,
among 40,000 churches.
Through Methodist mission sta
tions in Africa, money will be
used to answer the urgent need
for food, medicine, leadership,
and education.
“The “Bishop’s Appeal” was
initiated last month by t h e
Methodist Council of Bishops
through its president, Bishop
Gerald H. Kennedy of L o s
Angeles.
In a letter to Methodist min
isters in Georgia, Bishop Smith
stated:
“If there is any section of
the world of which thinking
people everywhere are neces
sarily conscious today, it is
Africa . . . Christian missions
have been at work there for
long years. What they have
been able to accomplish is one
of the most thrilling stories of
missionary achievement to be
found on the pages of history.”
“The Bishop’s Appeal is the
largest single offering our
church has ever undertaken
Only a minimum of $2,500,000
will begin to meet the challenge
in Africa.”
