Eighth Grade
On last Friday night many
of the girls and boys in the
seventh and eighth grades
went home with aching feet.
The Seventh Graders of the
Ficquett School entertained
the Eighth Graders at the an
■ nual party.
As soon as we walked into
the building we felt as though
we were walking into a secret
garden. There were beautiful
ly decorated trellises and lit
tle picket fences entwined with
many flowers.
We were kept busy dancing
to the music of the Townsmen
Dance Band, featuring Newton
High School students.
After some time everyone
I was glad to sit down and en
joy the delicious refreshments
of punch, cookies and mints.
When 10:30 o’clock rolled
. around we were sorry we had
to leave. Even though many
of us went home with tired
aching feet, we felt very grate
j ful to the girls, boys, mothers
and fathers who helped to
make possible this memorable
occasion.

A Grand Time
By Carole Hudson
On the eve of April 21,st.
; In the happy year of sixty-one
! All the seventh and eighth
graders
Gathered for some play and
' fun.
The room was gaily decorated,
And filled with a fragrance of
flowers.
And from the beginning to the
very end
Were the makings of unforget
table hours.
, The people danced all about
the floor
। With swiftly moving feet;
While the music poured from
the band,
And the drummer struck up a
beat.
At last, everyone made an
eager dash
For the tempting food.
And simply declared and
agreed
It was so deliciously good.
When the time came, everyone
( Began to drift slowly away,
i Thanking the seventh graders
and their mothers
For a time that was wonderful
and gay.

THE COVINGTON NEWS
ely thank you
For a party that was a world
of fun.
Thank You For The Party
Jimmy Snipes
’Twas the night of the party,
And all through the school
Everybody was dancing
And playing it “Cool”.
We were eating and drinking;
The band played real great.
We had such a fine time
We didn’t know it was so late.
But when the time to go ar
rived,
And the dance came to an end,
All the eighth graders said,
“We had a fine time. Thank
you, friend”.
“You treated us to a party.
And we enjoyed it very much,
With the band, the punch,
The cookies, and such”.
“We hope you had a good time,
And you surely must have, too.
For, at so fine a party
How can anyone be blue”?
There is such excitement in
the eighth grade at the Fic
quett School. The athletic
events, the graduation prepar
ations and many current events
are keeping us very busy.
On Friday, April 28, we
made our annual trip to the
Newton County High School.
We attended an interesting
chapel program presented by
the literary contestants. Then
we visited the classrooms
where we met some of our fu
ture teachers and took glances
into the many things that are
in store for us next year.
The report cards given out
recently showed some decided
improvements. There were
more honor roll students this
period than at anv previous pe
riod this term. Mr. Hutchinson
and the teachers seemed well
pleased.
We can hardly realize that
there are only four more weeks
until school will close for the
summer. They are packed full
of tests and activities. During
this week on Tuesday, Thurs
day and Friday we shall be
taking the nationally recom
mended tests in math, reading
and English. We hope that we
shall make good scores.
Our remaining weeks in
Ficquett will be filled with
wonderful events for the eigh
th graders. There will be Field
Day, May 5, Class night, Ban
ques May 12, Class Day picnic
May 19 and that much antici
l pated event —Graduation, May
26.

; the Turtle (in person) visited us.
; It belongs to Judy Shropshire.
The beautiful roses brought by
I Becky Henry, Jane Crawley and
Beverly Hogan have been enjoyed
. by everyone in our class.
One reading group is enjoying
reading about David in “Anything
Can Happen.” Our Arithmetic
Workbooks are lots of fun.
Eddie Rowe was seven years old
last Wednesday. Last Friday,
Janice Tuck had a seventh birth
day. Her entire family, (her par
ents and two sisters, Dr. and Mrs.
G. G. Tuck, Lisa and Cary) came
at one o’clock with ice cream and
cup cakes for everybody in o u r
class. They also brought Janice’s
birthday cake made by her grand
mother. It was on a cake stand
which turned and played “Happy
Birthday.” Each of us was given
a paint set as a favor. We enjoy
ed this party very much.
We have had many “indoor
days” this spring, but they have
been full of interest, fun, creative
activities and work.
Some of the best illustrations of
stories were put on our bulletin
board. They belonged to Carol
Tribble, Ted Greer. Kevin Bates,
Debbie Denham. Mary Thigpen,
Marigene Banks and Larry Dean.
We like poems. We have some
old favorites but we like some of
our new ones also. Our library
table has some interesting books
on it. This past week we have en
joyed "Heidi” and “Bambi.” We
hope that each pupil in our class
will go to the Newton County Lib
rary this summer and get books
to read and win a certificate for
reading 25 books.
We hope that our classroom has
been a challenging, vital place this
year where much learning has
gone on. We have learned to know
and love our classmates, we have
learned better manners about liv
ing with others, we have studied
health habits and safety, we have
a better appreciation of music and
other arts, we have enjoyed nature
study and science, we appreciate
our country more and know more
of other lands and people, we feel
deeper moral and spiritual values,
ve have had stimulation for reason
ing and to create, we have learned
to read, to write, to add, to sub
tract, to tell time on the hour and
' half hour, and in looking back
' our teacher says she sees much

Mrs. Ellington’s
Second Grade
We are happy and excited
this week. On Friday Mrs.
Hood’s second grade is going
with us on a train ride. Very
few of us have ever ridden on
a train. We will get on t h e
train in Covington and ride to
Rutledge where a school bus
will pick us up. Our mothers
are planning a picnic lunch for
us to enjoy before we come
back to school. We are getting
ready for the trip by learning
all we can about trains — all
kinds of trains. We have seen
a film, drawn pictures, heard
and written stories and learn
ed some poems and songs about
trains. When Friday comes we
expect to enjoy our trip and
picnic lunch very much.
We got our colorscopes back
this week. We all decided we
like these pictures of ourselves
better than any we have ever
had.
Two of our reading groups
have finished the required
number of books and are read
ing just for fun. Mrs. Elling
ton says we are good readers
and our achievement tests prove
it.
We are learning many things
about the sun, the moon and
the stars. The stars are larger
than we thought they were and
we found out that stars do not
have five points and they are
different colors and they are
hot. One night this week we
are going to look for the Big
Dipper.
In numbers work we play
arithmetic baseball and cracker
jack, our original game. These
help us practice our additive
and subtractive combinations.
Arithmetic is one of our favor
ite subjects.
In spelling this week we are
studying letter writing along
with our new words. We have
written letters 'before but this
is the first time our new words
have been used in a letter. Our
teacher thinks we are good
spellers as well as good readers.
She says she is proud of us.
growth in many ways and she feels
growing powers in the children of
our group. In just three weeks
school will be over for this school
year. We sincerely hope that the
summer vacation will be a safe,
happy time for all.
