Apply Nitrogen
To Cotton Early
For Best Results
Nitrogen side dressing must
be applied early to cotton to
get the most for the fertilizer
dollar, Extension Agronomist
Larry Torrance at the Univer
sity of Georgia College of Ag
riculture declared this week.
Side dressing should be ap
plied at about the time of se
sond cultivation. This corres
ponds to chopping time or the
four-leaf stage, he said. Early
application stimulates early

tion.
Research has shown that cot
ton uses about 17 percent of its
nitrogen before the early square
stage and 60 percent before the \
early boll stage, he pointed out. |
Over 90 per cent of the cot
ton harvested comes from a
four - week period of bloom
ing. A higher percentage of
blooms set fruit and mature
from the earlier weeks of
blooming.
Mr. Torrance said that gen
eral recommendations call for
using 40 to 60 pounds of nitro
gen side dressing per acre. This
should be applied in the soil
three to four inches deep at
the outer edges of the root zone.
This amount can be supplied
by using either 250 to 375
pounds of nitrate of soda, 125
to 185 pounds of amonium ni
trate or 200 to 300 pounds of
ammonium nitrate - limestone
mixtures. Nitrogen solutions
are also good sources of side
dressing, he said.
Effective insect control is es
sential to obtain good cotton
response to nitrogen, Mr. Tor
rance added.
Fatal accidents took the
lives of 15,303 children under
15 years of age in the United
State in 1959.
